P. Koro Apirana has very traditional beliefs
Definition

E. He is very cultural and likes to stay with old maori beliefs

E.'The trouble was that Koro Apirana could not reconcile his traditional beliefs.'

R. This relates to the themes in the book because in that time maori people were being told to be accepting of new culture but alot of maori people found it hard to keep tradition and culture as well as moving forward and Koro Apirana shows this

Term
P. Koro Apirana has Mana
Definition

E. Koro is a strong Maori leader and has pride in his tribe, culture and ancestors.

E. ' It announces our pride in our ancestors and acknowledges his importance to us.' page 32-33

R. I think this relates back to the theme of maori culture because in the Maori culture it is important for the leader of the tribe to be a strong leader and to look out for his whanau which Koro definitely does in  this  book.

Term
Who was Juliet's Suitor
Definition
Paris
Term
P. Koro Apirana had a bad temper and could get very angry
Definition

E. It was very easy to make Koro Apirana angry and when he was angry he got very angry and and it took him a long time to get over his anger.

E. 'Whenever he felt angry he would always get in his rowboat and row out into the middle of the ocean to sulk.'

' It only helped to harden his heart against his first born great grandchild.' page 25

R. I think Koro being angry towards Kahu just showed his struggle to accept new ways, making it all the more meaningful when he finally accepts Kahu at the end of the book.
