Definition

Wool Finishers Guild. Florence. it was considered one of the 7 greater arti (trades).  this guild dealt in woollen cloth and cooperated w the otehr corporations of bankers and merchants in administering the commune. At height of the industry the arte della lana directly employed 300 workers and indirectly 1/3 of florences population. This guild saw all the processes from raw baled wool to the final cloth and weavings (done in domiciles throughout the city.  It ensured quality standards were met and contracts were honored and organized activities of the guild members. 

 

-Wool is the great industrial craft of the late Middle Ages-

Were able to sell cloth to the East – unusual because European cloth was considered by Easterners to be by and large inferior

-Import wool from as far away as England and Spain

-No wool in Florence without the Arno
