Greek temple grew larger and even more complex, the addition of sculptural decoration increased in importance. Images carved on a separate slab and installed in the pediment space. Pediment: triangular space above the entrance of a temple where relief sculptures are placed. Medusa: power to turn humans into stone, protecting the temple.

Increasing interest in the anatomy. Suggests heroic strengths: massive torso and limbs, archaic smile and wiglike hair. A grave monument to a fallen warrior. "Stop and grieve at the tomb of the brave warrior Kroisos, slain by the wild god ares in front rank of battle." Meant to encourage similar noble actions and heroic character in the viewer.

Recounts Trojan War. Ajax mighty warrior and cousin of Achilles is dishonored when he is not given the dead Achille's armor, rather Odysseus is bestowed the honor. Shamed, he commits suicide. Portrays Ajax preparing for his suicide.

Red figure technique. Homer's Iliad: Sarpedon, a son of Zeus, was killed by the warrior Patroclus while fighting the Trojans. Hypnos (sleep) and Thanatos (death) carrying the dead warrior. Hermes watching over the body to escort it to the underworld.

Bronze usually melted down in the past to create weapons or used to create new sculptures. Warrior A discovered in the ocean. Balance b/w idealized anatomy forms and naturalistic details. Eyeballs made of bone and colored glass, eyelashes and Eyebrows cast separately, lips and nipple made with pinkish copper, silver teeth, use to hold a spear and shield in either hand. Possibly commemorating a military victory.

Persian troops destroyed the Acropolis which led Pericles to rebuilt the acropolis to honor the gods. Worked cont. after Pericles' death. Completed at the end of the 5th C. Religious building and votive statues filled the hilltop. Pantheon: largest building, dedicated to Athena.
