Term
1. Describe the use of the following processes: LBD, LBW, and LBC.
Definition
-LBD uses a laser light to drill through hard materials such as synthetic diamonds, tungsten carbide cutting tools, glass, or ceramics.
-LBW uses a laser to weld materials too thin or too hard for other welding processes.
-LBC uses a laser to cut materials without overheating delicate parts that may be within a few thousandths of the cut.
Term
2. How is laser light formed?
Definition
Laser light is produced as the atoms or molecules slow down from a higher energy state to a lower energy state.
Term
3. Other than lasing material, what is the difference between solid state lasers and gas lasers?
Definition
Solid state lasers are most often low-power continuous or high-power pulse, and gas lasers can produce continuous high-power outputs.
Term
4. What effect does a materials surface have on the laser beam?
Definition
All surfaces absorb and reflect light. The greater the reflection, the less effect the laser has on the material.
Term
6. What are reactive laser assist gases called? How do they work?
Definition
They are called exothermic gases and they react to the metal like an oxyfuel cutting torch.
Term
7. What type of laser beam is used for drilling? Why?
Definition
A pulsed laser, because the vapor produced by the laser blast would interfere with a continuous laser beam.
Term
8. What is CAC-A?
Definition
Air carbon arc cutting.
Term
10. Why are some carbon arc electrodes copper-coated?
Definition
To decrease electrode overheating and increase strength to reduce accidental breakage.
Term
11. What may occur if an SMA welding machine has below minimum arc voltage for air carbon arc gouging?
Definition
Low arc voltages tend to sputter out making it hard to produce clean cuts.
Term
12. How can carbon arc welding be used to ensure 100% weld penetration?
Definition
By back gouging the root of the weld.
Term
13. What is washing, and how can it be used?
Definition
Washing can be used to remove large areas that contain defects, to reduce the transitional stresses of unequal-thickness plates, or to allow space for the capping of a surface with a wear-resistant material.
Term
14. How are oxygen lance cuts usually started?
Definition
By using an oxyfuel torch to heat the lance tip to a red hot temperature.
Term
15. What unusual material can be cut with an oxygen lance?
Definition
Concrete.
Term
16. What are the advantages of abrasive powder to the water jet cutting stream?
Definition
Higher cutting speeds, harder materials, and improved kerfed surface finishes.
