  • Synactic: delayed & endpoint of development falls short of normal language competence
Term
Cochlear implants
Definition
  • device surgically implanted in the cochlea that allows a deaf individual to perceive sound
  • sound is picked up by external mic, processed & converted into electrical impulses
  • implanted in children as young as 3-6
  • Research still sparse – but progress is made
  • once CI is activated
  • Best outcomes with greatest residual hearing
  • Requires extensive post-surgical therapy (not a deafness “cure”)
Term
cochlear implants controvery
Definition
  • deaf community argue: deafness is not a disability in need of cure
  • threaten deaf culture
Term

Definition
NO
Term

Definition
  • phonological: visible v. invisible articulatory movements
  • lexicon: fewer words for things that can be seen, but not touched, more words for things associated with auditory change
  • synactic: about same as that of sighted children, minor differences traced to differences in input
Term
Non-linguistic input
Definition
helpful not necessary
Term

  • clear deficits on tests of morphosynactic knowledge
  • seem to produce more than they comprehend
  • focus on the little things and miss the big picture
Term
Williams Syndrome & Language

  • poor performance on grammar (and finding pattern regulations)
  • acquire language differently
Term
