Term
Describe a cold front.
Definition
Lasts 5-7 days and they bring severe weather. A cold wedge pushes beneath teh warm mound.
Term
Describe a warm front.
Definition
Mound of warm air crawls up a wedge of cooler air. Lasts 8-14 days and brings milder, bad weather.
Term
Describe an occluded front.
Definition
Weaker version of a cold front. Cold wedge forcing under a warm mound of air, then the wedge drags the warm air along. Causes less severe bad weather.
Term
What are the doldrums?
Definition
An area of calm surface winds.
Term
What are horse latitudes?
Definition
At 30 degrees North and South latitude sinking air gives you another area of calm surface winds.
Term
What is the coriolis effect?
Definition
The apparent shift in the path of wind moving over the surface due to Earth's rotation.
Term
Describe how a land breeze forms.
Definition
The water is warmer than land during the night and when the heat rises from the water the cooler air from the land takes it's place.
Term
Describe how a sea breeze forms.
Definition
During the day the land is warmer and when the heat rises from the land the cooler air from the water takes its place.

Term
How does rain form?
Definition
Raindrops fall to Earth when they get too heavy. Faster winds=larger drops.
Term
How does sleet form?
Definition
Frozen raindrop. Randrop freezed into a pellet of ice before it lands.
Term
What is freezing rain?
Definition
Raindrop freezes after it hits.
Term
How does hail form?
Definition
A raindrop falls to the Earth and freezes but before it hits the surface an updraft carries it back up. More accumaltes on it and it grows bigger and bigger until ti get heavy enough to fall to the Earth.
Term
How does snow form?
Definition
Falti, six-sided ice crystal. Frozen water vapor. (Cloud droplets)
Term
What is a cloud droplet?
Definition
Tiny droplet of water that makes clouds. ((1 million times smaller than a raindrop))
Term
What are air masses?
Definition
Large mounds of air that have the same temperature and humidity throughout.
Term
Describe a continental tropical air mass and the weather it brings.
Definition
Form over hot areas on land. Contains warm, dry, air. Summer: not hot, not dry weather. Winter: Warm and dry weather.
Term
Describe a continental polar air mass and the weather it brings.
Definition
Forms over cold areas of the land. Contains cool, dry, air. Summer: Cool+ Dray Winter: Bitter Cold
Term
Describe a maritime tropical air mass and the weather it brings.
Definition
Form over warm oceans. Contain wairm, moist air.
Term
Describe a maritime polar air mass adn the weather it brings.
Definition
Form over cool oceans. Contain cool, moist air.
Term
How does lightning form?
Definition
1. Negative charges move down.
2. Pos. charges move up.
3. Contact made.
4. Pos. charges move up!
5. LIGHTNING all the negative charges move towards the ground.
6. Repeats
Term
What is a front?
Definition
A boundary between air masses which contain different air.
Term
What are trade winds?
Definition
Winds found between the equator and 30 degrees latitude. They blow east.
Term
What type of air mass affect the State of Maine?
Definition
Maritime Polar
Term
What causes thunder?
Definition
Lightning burns a hole through the sky and the air that gets sucked back in like a vaccuum make a loud noise.
Term
What is sheet lightning?
Definition
Form of cloud to cloud lightning that causes spiderwebs in the sky.
Term
What type of weather is associated with low pressure systems?
Definition
Foul, weather
Term
What type of weather is associated with high pressure systems?
Definition
Fair with no clouds
Term
Describe a stationary front.
Definition
It almost doesn't move and it has any type of weather.
Term
What are the prevailing westerlies?
Definition
Winds that blow from the southwest to northeast in the zone between 30 degrees and 60 degrees latitude
Term
What are the polar easterlies?
Definition
Cold dry air masses that descend to the eart at the poles and blow outwardly.
