Term

Density

Definition

Defintion : a variety of factors affect water density, more dense water sinks, setting up convection currents

Sentence : Density IS water.

Ex1 - Less dense

Ex2 - More dense

Term
Surface Currents[image]
Definition

Definition : The water at the ocean surface is moved primarily by winds that blow in certain patterns because of the Earth's spin

Sentence : Surface currents are contolled by the wind.

Ex1 - Upwelling

Ex2 - Wind

Term
Upwelling[image]
Definition

Defintion : a process in which deep, cold water rises toward the surface

Sentence : Upwelling is also controlled by the wind.

Ex1 - Cold water

Ex2 - Warm water

Term
Coriolis Effect[image]
Definition

Defintion :  how a moving object seems to veer toward the right in the Northern hemisphere and left in the Southern hemisphere

Sentence : The coriolis effect has to do with earth's rotation.

Ex1 - Wind

Ex2 - Earth's rotation

Term
Deep Ocean Current[image]
Definition

Definition : the density and how coldwater sinking down the bottom and the warmer rising

Sentence : Deep ocean currents happen deep in the ocean.

Ex1 - coldwater

Ex2 - warmwater

Term
Water Cycle[image]
Definition

Defintion : a continuous cycle where water evaporates, travels into the air and becomes part of a cloud, falls down to earth as precipitation, and then evaporates again

Sentence : The water cycle repeats over and over and over again.

Ex1 - Water

Ex2 - Evaporation

Term
Ground Water[image]
Definition

Defintion : water found underground in the cracks and spaces in soil

Sentence : Ground water is underground.

Ex1 - water

Ex2 - underground

Term
Surface Water[image]
Definition

Definition : The top layer of a body of water

Sentence : The surface water is the top of a lake or steam.

Ex1 - water

Ex2 - lake

Term

Groundwater Cross Section

Definition

Water Table : the level below which the ground is filled with water

Permeable Table : An aquifer where the water table is at or near atmosphere pressure

Impermeable Table : how heavy a rock is

Confined Aquifier : An aquifer that is under pressure

Unconfined Aquifier : able to recieve wate from the surface

Pumped Well :

Artisian Zone : a well in which water rises under pressure

Zone of Saturation : the area of the ground that has all the spaces filled with water

Zone of Aeration :

Cone of Depression : happens in an aquifer when groundwater is pumped from a well

Definition

Benefits : good resource

Drawbacks : dangers of heavily pumping water from aquifers

Term
Salt water intrusion [image]
Definition

Benefits :

Drawbacks : can lead to contamination of drinking water sources and other consequences

Term

Dams

Definition

Benefits : controls the waterrunning through a specific river

Definition

Definition : a source that is not easily seen

Sentence : A non-point source pollution relats to water and air.

Ex1 - drainage

Ex2 - water runoff

Term

Point source pollution

Definition

Definition : a source that s easily seen or noticed

Sentence : f you cant see it, its a point source pollution

Ex1 - sewage

Term

Primary waste water treatment

Definition

Definition : removes flotaing materials

Sentence : The primary waste water treatment is the first stage of the whole process.

Ex1 - filters

Ex2 - scrapers

Term

Secondary waste water treatment

Definition

Definition : removing contaminants

Sentence : The secondary waste water treatment comes after the primary waste water treatment.

Ex1 - runoff

Ex2 - household sewage

Term

Tertiary waste water treatment

Definition

Definition : to make sure the water is clean

Sentence : The goal of tertiary waste water treatment is to remove unwanted elements.
