Term
What is water?
Definition
Water is a chemical compound with the chemical formula H2O. A water molecule contains 2 hydrogen and 1 oxygen atoms that are connected by a covalent bond.
Term
What is a covalent bond?
Definition
It is a chemical bond that involves the sharing of electron pairs between atoms.
Term
Water is attracted to itself?
Definition
Water molecules are attracted to itself because of polarity. Polarity means that one side is positive and one side is negative. They connect because oposites attract.
Term
Water Molecule Diagram
Definition
Oxygen is negative. Hydrogen is positive. 1 oxygen atom. 2 hydrogen atoms.
Term
Polarity
Definition
One end is positive, one end is negative (different charges at end. Opposites attract!)
Term
3 facts about water
Definition
  • Water is the only substance in nature found in all 3 common states of matter: liquid, solid, gas/vapor.
  • Water is the only common substance that is less dense in solid form than in liquid form.
  • Water is known as the "Universal Solvent." It can dissolve more substances than any other liquid.
Term
Water is what?
Definition
Less dense in a solid form than in a liquid form.
Term
Density
Definition
Density is defined as a mass/unit volume. It is a measure of how tightly packed and how heavy the molecules are in an object. Density is the amount of matter within a certain volume.
Term
If ice didn't float?
Definition
If it didn't float than likely life couldn't exist on Earth. Also, because it only does a little layer at the surface freeze, leaving plenty of space for life to exist underneath. If it sank the entire ocean could freeze.
Term
Another word for the "water cycle"
Definition
hydrological
Term
Order of the Hydrological Cycle
Definition
  • Evaporation (liquid H2O to water vapor )
  • Condensation (water vapor to liquid H2O)
  • Precipitation (liquid H2O to liquid rain, solid hail, or solid snow)
Term
Hydrological Cycle
Definition
Another name for the water or H2O cycle that describes the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth. The change and movement of the Earth's water from liquid to vapor to solid. The water cycle is solar powered.
Term
Evaporation
Definition
Occurs when the sun heats water particles up, they gain energy, move faster, spread farther apart, and become water vapor.
Term
Condensation
Definition
The opposite of evaportation; it occurs when air particles cool, loose energy, move closer together ("stick" together) and the vapor collects into liquid form.
