Term
What requirements must be met before you can create a DRS cluster?
Definition
* All hosts within the cluster need to be attached to shared storage
* All volumes on the hosts must use the same volume names
* All processors must be from the same vendor class and the same processor family. EVC will help solve the feature differences between members of a family, but processors should be of the same family
* All vMotion requirements must be met
Term
Outline the steps to create an HA/DRS cluster
Definition
Right click on the Datacenter and click 'New Cluster'.
Name the cluster and check whether to enable or disable HA and/or DRS.
Select an automation level for DRS
Select whether or not to enable DPM and configure settings
Select whether to enable host monitoring for HA (hosts exchange heartbeats)
Select whether to enable or disable admission control and the desired Admission control policy
Specify VM Cluster Defaults
Select VM Monitoring settings and sensitivity
Enable or disable EVC
Select swap file policy for VMs in the cluster?
Term
What are the 3 automation levels for DRS?
Definition
* Manual – Initial placement and recommendations are both displayed and will need to be approved.
* Partially Automated – Initial placement will be performed automatically, migration will be displayed.
* Fully Automated – Initial placement and migration is fully automated.
Term
What are the options for DPM? (3 options)
Definition
Off – no DPM
Manual – Only recommendations of power off and on are recommended
Automatic – vCenter will bring hosts in and out of standby according to the threshold settings
Term
Which feature enables hosts to exchange heartbeats
Definition
Select 'enable host monitoring for HA' when setting up the cluster
Term
What are the three Admission control policy options?
Definition
1. Hosts Failures the cluster tolerates – Specified in the number of hosts.
2. Percentage of cluster resources reserved as failover spare capacity – % for CPU and memory
3. Specify failover hosts – specify host to use for HA failover.
Term
What are the options for Virtual Machine Cluster Defaults
Definition
VM restart priority – Disabled, Low, Medium, High
Host Isolation response – Leave Powered On, Power Off, Shutdown
Term
What options do you have in VM Monitoring settings?
Definition
VM Monitoring Settings (Disabled, VM Monitoring, VM and Application Monitoring). Monitoring sensitivity (Low, Medium, High)
Term
What are the two options for Swap file policy in setting up a DRS/HA cluster?
Definition
Store with Virtual Machine
Store on a datastore specified by host
Term
What are the steps to delete an HA/DR cluster?
Definition
In vSphere Client, right click on the cluster and select 'Remove'
Term
How do you add a host to a DRS/HA cluster if it is already managed by vCenter?
Definition
You can simply drag and drop the host inot the cluster and specify the resource pool you want to use. You can put all the VMs in the cluster's root resource pool or create a new resource pool utilizing the host's existing resource pool.
Term
How do you add a new host, that is not already managed by vSphere to an HA/DRS cluster?
Definition
1. Right click the cluster and select Add Host.
2. Supply the host name/IP and authentication credentials
3. Select whether to put the VMs in the cluster's root resource pool or to create a resource pool for these VMs that becomes a child of the cluster
Term
Outline the steps to remove an ESXi Host from a cluster
Definition
1. Check host is eligible to be removed
2. Navigate to Hosts and Clusters view in vSphere client, put host into maintainence mode,
3. Drag the host out of the cluster and drop it into the datacenter if you only want to remove it from the cluster, or right click and select 'remove' to remove it from vCenter
Term
What precautions should you take when removing a host from a cluster?
Definition
1. If a host is removed, it retains only its root resource pool. Any resource pools created in the cluster are removed (even those created when joining the cluster)
2. All VMs must be migrated off the host before removing a host from a cluster in order to put the host into maintenance mode
3. Your host contributes to the overall resources in the cluster. By removing the host, you could cause your cluster to be marked as yellow and an alarm triggered if there are VMs with reservations set. You could also affect HA and failover capacity
Term
Describe how to add a VM to a cluster
Definition
There are 3 ways to include a VM in a cluster.

1. When you add a host to a cluster, all it's VMs are added
2. When a VM is created, you can choose to place it on a cluster
3. YOu can use the 'Migrate VM' wizard to migrate the VM or simply drag it into the cluster's hierarchy
Term
Describe how to remove a VM from a cluster
Definition
1. In removing a host from a cluster, if you power off the VMs but leave them on the host in maintenance mode, the VMs will also move off the cluster
2. Use the Migrate VM wizard to move the VM outside the cluster. If the VM is a member of DRS cluster rules group, a warning will be displayed but it will not stop the migration
Term
If you attempt to move a VM off a cluster and the VM is a member of a DRS cluster rules group, what action occurs?
Definition
A warning will displayed, but it will not stop the migration.
Term
What can you see through the DRS tab in vSphere client, and how do you get there?
Definition
DRS Recommendations, Faults and history. Go to hosts and cluster view, select the cluster you want to monitor and then you'll find the DRS tab.
Term
How can you monitor a DRS/HA cluster from the summary tab?
Definition
vSphere client (logged in to vCenter), navigate to the hosts and clusters view, select your cluster and go to the summary tab.
Term
What can you monitor from the Summary tab of an HA/DRS cluster?
Definition
*Admission control - enabled or disabled
* Current Failover Capacity - how many hosts are available for failover
* Configured failover capacity - items listed here will be different, depending on the admission control policy you are using
* Host monitoring - enabled or disabled
* VM Monitoring - enabled or disabled
* Application monitoring - enabled or disabled
