Classification of joint

Functional Classification

Synarthroses- immovable joint, sagittal suture on the skull

Amphiarthroses- slightly movable joint, for example inferior tibiofibular joint

Diarthroses- is a freely movable joint, for example the shoulder joint

Strucural Classification of Joints  

bases on type of tissue between adjacent bones

Fibrous joint-bones held together by fibrous connective tissue, no joint cavity or space and no movement allowed

i.                    Sutures of the skull- bones are separated by thin layer of fibrous tissue, synarthroses joints

ii.                   Syndesmosis- bones are united by a thicker layer of dense fibrous tissue, this separates the bones slightly allows some movement, middle radio-ulnar joint

Cartilaginous Joint- cartilage in between the two bones, no joint cavity, little or no movement, strong, protection and strength.

i.                    Synchondrosis- immovable union of bones involving hyaline cartilage, coastal cartilage

ii.                   Symphysis- two bones are covered by hyaline cartilage, w/ a disc of fibrocartilege in between.

Synovial Joint- connective tissue forms a cavity, has a synovial memrane and has a joint capsule

                        -specialized for movement, the hyaline cartilage allows smooth movement along with the synovial fluid

                        -fibrous capsule surround the whole joint
