Term
What are the 7 main prehension patterns?
Definition
  1. Three jaw chuck - pencil grip, two fingers on the thumb
  2. Lateral grip - key grip
  3. Spherical - holding a ball or turning the doorknob, or opening a jar; the fingers are abducted in this grip
  4. Cylindrical - grabbing a bottle; fingers are adducted
  5. Hood - carrying a bag handle
  6. Tip - thumb and first finger (like picking up a coin)
  7. Palmar - lumbrical, holding a plate
Term

What is the functional position of the wrist?

Definition
  • Wrist - 30 degrees
  • MP's - 20 degrees
  • IP's & DIP's - 5 - 15 degrees
  • Wrist in radial deviation
  • Thumb in opposition
  • Maintain web space
  • Support palmar arch (maintained)
Term

What are the two main categories

for an UE orthoses?

Definition
  • Positional - brace is static; just holds the hand in one position
  • Assistive - facilitates extension range or flexion range
    • a dynamic brace that will take on some of the work for the body part by use of a joint or a spring to help assist w/ motion
Term

What type of brace is this?

Definition
Positional brace - CTS splint
Term

What type of brace is this?

Definition
Positional brace - deQuarvanes (has thumb spica to make thumb non functional)
Term

What type of brace is this, and

what could it be used for?

Definition
Assistive - MP extension stop, could be used for a radial nerve palsy, or for managing wrist extension
Term

What is the main goal of a positional

brace, and its most common use?

Definition
  • Prevent further deformity and allow for prehension
    • most commonly used for flexion and internal rotation deformities
    • internal rotation - common for hemiparesis, CP pts, CVA pts
Term

What type of brace is this?

Definition
Assistive - tenodesis brace used for reciprocating motion of wrist extension and finger flexion
Term
What is the most common use for an assistive brace?
Definition
  • produce reciprocating motion such as wrist extension and finger flexion (tenodesis)
  • utilizes rubber bands and/or jionts within the brace to create the motion
Term

What is the difference between

a W.H.O. and a H.O.?

Definition
  • W.H.O. - wrist/hand orthosis - it crosses the wrist
  • H.O. - hand orthosis - it does not cross the wrist
Term
At what level of SCI would a W.H.O be required for?
Definition
C5
Term
What is the difference between a custom vs. a prefabricated UE orthoses?
Definition
  • Custom - used for long term use, made to patient specifications
  • Prefabricated - faster and easier, used mainly for short term issues
Term

What motions are possible at the

scapulothoracic articulation?

Definition
  • elevation
  • depression
  • protraction
  • retreaction
  • upward rotation
  • downward rotation
  • scapular tilt
Term
What motions and degrees are available at the glenohumeral articulation?
Definition

The articulation is between the

glenoid fossa and the head of the humerus

  • flexion - 0 - 180
  • extension - 180 - 0
  • hyperextension - 0 60
  • abduction - 0 - 180
  • adduction - 180 - 0
  • horizontal abduction - 0 - 30
  • horizontal adduction - 0 - 120
  • internal rotation - 0 - 70
  • external rotation - 0 - 90
Term
What is the articulation landmarks at the elbow and what motions are avilable in what degrees here?
Definition

The articulation is between the ulna and the humerus; and the proxilmal radial unlar joint

  • flexion - 0 - 150
  • extension - 0
  • pronation & supination - 0 - 80
Term

What are the articulations in the hand

and the thumb and the motions available?

Definition

MCP (metacarpophalageal joints),

the PIP, DIP, IP, and CMC

Hand

  • MCP
    • flexion 0 - 80
    • hyperextension 0 - 45
  •  PIP
    • flexion 0 - 100
  • DIP
    • Flexion 0 - 90
    • Hyperextion 0 - 10

Thumb - saddle joint, CMC joint

  • CMC
    • abduction 0 - 70
    • flexion 0 - 15
    • extension 0 - 20
    • opposition - tip of thumb to base of 5th digit
  •  MCP
    • flexion 0 - 50
  •  IP
    • flexion 0 - 80
Term

What is this device called and

what is is primarily used for?

Definition
compression glove - a total contact positioning glove, used to help manipulate and form scar tissue
Term

What is the purpose of this device?

Definition
assistive device - used to help with ADLs such as simulating the 3 jaw chuck position
Term
