Occipital Belly

Origin: Occipital bone and mastoid process of temporal bone

Insertion: Epicranial aponeurosis

Action: Draws scalp posteriorly

Zygomaticus Major

(cheek bone) (Greater)

Origin: Zygomatic bone

Insertion: Skin at angle of mouth and orbicularis oris

Action: Draws angle of mouth superiorly and laterally (smile)

Innervation: Facial (VII) 7 nerve

Zygomaticus Minor

(Lesser)

Origin:  Zygomatic Bone

Insertion: Upper lip

Action: Raises upper lip, exposing teeth

Innervation: Facial (VII) 7 Nerve

Levator labii superioris

(raises) (upper)

Origin: Superior to infraorbital foramen of maxilla

Insertion: Skin at angle of mouth and orbicularis oris

Action: Raises upper lip

Innervation: Facial VII  Nerve

Depressor labii inferioris

(lowers)

Origin: Mandible

Insertion: Skin of lower lip

Action: Depresses (lowers) lower lip

Innervation: Facial (VII) Nerve

Depressor anguli oris

(angle or corner)

Origin: Mandible

Insertion: Angle of mouth

Action: Draws mouth laterally and inferiorly, as in opening mouth

Innervation: Facial (VII) 7 Nerve

Levator anguli oris

Origin: Inferior to infraorbital foramen

Insertion: Skin of lower lip and orbicularis oris.

Action: Draws angle of mouth laterally and superiorly

Innervation: Facial (VII) 7 Nerve

Buccinator

(cheek)

Origin: Alveolar processes of maxilla and mandible and pterygomandibular raphe (fibrous band extending from the pterygoid process of the sphenoid bone to the mandible)

Insertion: Orbicularis oris (mouth)                                           Action: Whistling, blowing, and sucking; draws mouth laterally; and assists in mastication (chewing)

Innervation: Facial (VII) Nerve

Risorius

Origin: Fascia over parotid (salivary) gland

Insertion: Skin at angle of mouth

Action: Draws angle of mouth laterally, as in grimacing.

Innervation: Facial (VII) 7 Nerve

Platysma

(flat, broad)

Origin: Fascia over deltoid and pectoralis major muscles

Insertion: Mandible, muscle around angle of mouth, and skin of lower face.

Action: Draws outer part of lower lip inferiorly and posteriorly as in pouting; depresses mandible

Innervation: Facial (VII) 7 Nerve

Orbicularis oculi

(oculi = of the eye)

Origin: Medial wall of orbit

Insertion: Circular path around orbit

Action: Closes eye

Innervation: Facial (VII) 7 nerve

Corrugator supercilii

(wrinkle) (of the eyebrow)

Origin: medial end of superciliary arch of frontal bone

Insertion: skin of eyebrow

Action: Draws eyebrow inferiorly and wrinkles skin of forehead vertically as in frowning

Innervation: facial (VII) 7 nerve

Levator palpebrae superioris

(eyelids)

Origin: Roof of orbit (lesser wing of sphenoid bone)

Insertion: Skin of upper eyelid

Action:  Elevates upper eyelid (opens eye)

Innervation: Oculormotor (III) Nerve

Superior rectus

(rectus = fascicles parallel to midline)

Origin: Common tendinous ring (attatched to orbit around optic foramen)

Insertion: Superior end and central part of eyeball.  (elevate)

Action: Moves eyeball superiorly (elevation) and medially (adduction), and rotates it medially.

Innervation: Oculomotor (III) Nerve

Inferior rectus

Origin: Common tendinous ring (attached to orbit around optic foramen).

Insertion: Inferior and central part of eyeball.  (depress)

Action:  Moves eyeball inferiorly (depression) and medially (adduction), and rotates it medially.

Innervation:  Oculomotor (III) Nerve

Lateral rectus

Origin: Common tendinous ring (attached to orbit around optic foramen).

Insertion: Lateral side of eyeball (away)

Action: Moves eyeball laterally (abduction)

Innervation:  Abducens (VI)6 Nerve

Medial rectus

(moves inferiorly)

Origin: Common tendinous ring (attached to orbit around optic foramen).

Insertion: Medial side of eyeball. (toward)

Action: Moves eyeball medially. (adduction)

Innervation: Oculomotor III Nerve

Superior oblique

(oblique = fascicles diagonal to midline)

Origin: Sphenoid b one, superior and medial to the tendinous ring in the orbit

Insertion: Eyeball between superior and lateral recti.  The muscle inserts into the superior and lateral surfaces of the eyeball via a tendon that passes through the trochlea

Action:  Moves eyeball inferiorly (depression) and laterally (abduction), and rotates it medially.

Innervation:  Trochlear (IV) 4 Nerve

Origin: Maxilla in floor of orbit

Insertion: Eyeball between inferior and lateral recti

Action: Moves eyeball superiorly (elevation) and laterally (abduction) and rotates it laterally

Innervation: Oculomotor (III) Nerve
