Term
What is the function of epithelial tissue?
Definition

1. Covers and protects the body surface

2. Lines body cavities

3. Specializes in moving substances into and out of blood

4. Forms many glands

Term
What is the shape of squamous epithelium and what are the two types of it?
Definition

1. The shape of the cells are flat and thin.

The two types of squamous epithelium are simple squamous and stratified squamous.

2. Simple squamous occurs in alveoli of lungs, walls of capillaries, lining of the blood vessles and its purpose of protection, diffusion, and filtration.

3. Stratified Squamous occurs in the epidermis of skin, linings of mouth, and vagina and its purpose is to cover.

Term
What is the shape of the Cubodial Epithelium, where does it occur, and what is its function?
Definition

1.Shape of the cells are cube-shaped and hexagonal.

2. Occurs in the lining of the kidney nephrons, surface of the ovaries.

3. Functions: Absorption, secretion, and protection

Term
What shape are Columnar Epithelium, what are the two types, what are their functions and where do they occur?
Definition

1. Shape are elongated, and column-shaped.

2. Pseudostratified ciliated columnar- occurs in the lining of the respiratory tract and the functions are secretion of mucus, and movement of mucus.

3. Simple columnar- occurs in the lining of the intestines, uterus, ear canals and the functions are protection, secretion, and absorption.

Term
What is the function of connective tissue and what is the rule?
Definition

1. Function is to support the body and its parts; to connect and hold the body parts together; to transport substances theough the body, and to protect body from "foreign invaders".

2. The rule is connective tissue cells are widely separated by a matrix, consisting of a noncellular material that varies from solid to semifluid to fluid.

Term
What is fibrous connective tissue and what types are there?
Definition

1. Fibrous connective tissue contains collagen fibers and elastic fibers.

The three types are:

1. Adipose- Occurs beneath skin; around organs and heart; padding. Function: Insulation, support, store fat.

2. Dense irregular- Occurs dermis of skin. Function: Add strength and elasticity to skin.

3. Dense regular- Occurs tendins and ligaments. Function: Tendons- connect muscle to bone. Ligaments: Connect bones to other bones at joints.

Term
What is cartilage and what are the 3 types?
Definition

1. Cartilage- contains semi-gel matrix around chondrocytes.

2. Hyaline- Smooth matrix. occurs in the tracheal rings, end of long bones, sternum, and fetal skeleton.

3. Fibrocartilage- Tough fibers in matrix. occurs in intervetebral discs, joints

4. Elastic cartilage- elastic fibers in matric. Occurs in pinna of ear.

Term
What is matrix of bone made of?
Definition
Hardened calcium salts.
