Term
The cell cycle is controlled by cyclins and cyclin dependent kinases; which ones are constitutive and which are transiently expressed?
Definition
Cyclins are transiently expressed and degraded rapidly, they are also required to activate the constitutively inactively expressed CDK's.
Term
What are the 3 key cell groups that the body is made of?
Definition
Labile cells, which are generated from stem cells and are continously dividing with unlimited proliferative potential. Stable cells, usually dormant but enter the cell cycle in response to injury in the parenchyma and mesenchyma. Lastly there's the Permanent cells which terminally differentiated and non-proliferative like heart muscles and neurons
Term
What are the most imporant mediators of cell growth and what are they collectively known as?
Definition
Collectively known as "pleiotropic polypeptide growth factors." They are: Platelet-derived growth factor, Epidermal growth factor, Fibroblast growth factor, Transforming growth factor and macrophage derived growth factors (IL-1 and TNF).
Term
Interstitial matrix and Basement membrane represent 2 basic forms of what part of the cell and what is its purpose?
Definition
ECM and it provides the platform for cell adhesion and regulates the cell growth, motion and differentiation of the cells residing within it.
Term
What are the 3 major types of ECM components, what do they do and what are they made of?
Definition
1.)Fibrous, structural proteins:tensile strength and elasticity through collagen and elastin. 2.)Water hydrated gel-like components: give lubrication with proteoglycans and hyaluronic acid. 3.)Adhesive glycoproteins connect matrix elements to each other and to ECM cells with fibronectin, laminin, and integrins
Term
Angiogenesis, migration and proliferation of fibroblasts, deposition of ECM, and maturation of the newly formed fibrous tissue are all parts of what process?
Definition
Scar formation, when the injury is extensive and cannot be repaired by cellular regeneration alone
Term
What forms in 3-5 days, eventually resulting in fibrosis and is characterized by multiple new, thin capillaries and fibroblast proliferation?
Definition
Granulation tissue
Term
T/F bFGF and VEGF are both promoters of angiogenesis, and produced by stromal cells?
Definition
T
Term
How is a scar formed?
Definition
1.)emigration and proliferation of fibroblasts by PDGF, bFGF & TGF-b 2.)Deposition of ECM by fibroblasts 3.)existing fibroblasts become more synthetic (deposition of collagen induced by PDGF, bFGF, TGF-b, IL-1 & TNF) 4.) Scar formation depends on net accumulation of collagen
Term
All of the following are part of what avascular tissue: inactive fibroblasts, dense collagen deposits, elastin, & other ecm?
Definition
scar tissue
Term
ECM synthesis and MMP(collagenases, gelatinases, & stromelysins) balance must be maintained in order for what to not be destroyed?
Definition
Tissue integrity...otherwise there may be destruction or overgrowth.
Term
What is the inhibitor of MMP activity and osteoclasts?
Definition
doxycycline
