Term
What is the optic nerve?
Definition
Transmits signals from brain to eye
Term
What is the lacrimal gland?
Definition
Exocrine; tears-clean and moisten the eye
Term
What is the conjunctiva?
Definition
Lines eyelids, can get a disease called "pink eye"-very catchy
Term
How many layers does the eye have and what are they?
Definition
3; sclera, choroid coat, retina
Term
What is the sclera?
Definition
White part, connective tissue
Term
What is the choroid coat?
Definition
Middle layer with many blood vessels
Term
What is the retina?
Definition
Innermost layer of nerve cells; translates light to impulses
Term
What is the cornea?
Definition
Circular, transparent front of sclera
Term
What are cones?
Definition
Color
Term
What are rods?
Definition
Black and white
Term
What are most cones located?
Definition
Fovea Centralis (back surface of retina)-small part of back
Term
What is amblyopia?
Definition
"Lazy eye", early childhood; force weak eye to work by covering other eye; surgery sometimes; blindness in weak eye may occur if not treated before 9 years old
Term
What is astigmatism?
Definition
Abnormal shape or curve of cornea which causes blurred vision; glasses/contact work
Term
What is cataracts?
Definition
"Fogs over eye" lens; caused by age, drugs, cortisone, prednisone, trauma. Glasses don't really help, replacement surgery fixes it
Term
What is conjunctivitis?
Definition
"Pink eye", staph or strep (bacteria) cause it. Antibiotics (eyedrops) Characterized by swelling, pain, or pus
Term
What is glaucoma?
Definition
Increase in intraocular pressure with in eye. Usually over age 40. Leading cause of blindness. Early signs: loss of night vision, mild aching. Treated with medication.
Term
What is myopia?
Definition
Nearsightedness, focuses in front of retina
Term
What is hyperopia?
Definition
Farsightedness, focuses behind the retina
Term
What is presbyopia?
Definition
Loss of lens elasticity (farsightedness); older people
Term
What is strabismus?
Definition
Eyes don't focus or move together. Cross-eyed, muscle weakness, exercise or surgery to fix and covering bad eye.
Term
What is the iris?
Definition
Colored portion of eye
Term
What is the pupil?
Definition
Center of the iris where light passes through, can change size
Term
What is the lens?
Definition
Adjustable in shape and it refracts light to focus on the retina
Term
What is the aqueous humor?
Definition
Clear, watery, fluid that fills the space between the cornea and iris
Term
What is the vitreous humor?
Definition
Clear jelly-like and behind the lens
Term
What is the pinna or auricle?
Definition
What people call their ears, part ouside
Term
What is the auditory canal?
Definition
Tube between outside and ear drum
Term
What is the tympanic membrane?
Definition
Eardrum separates external auditory canal and middle ear
Term
What is the middle ear?
Definition
Contains 3 bones and is connected to throat via Eustachian tube
Term
What are the 3 bones in the middle ear?
Definition
Malleus, incus, stapes
Term
What is the eustachian tube?
Definition
Tube between throat and middle ear for the purpose of pressure equalization (external ear and middle ear)
Term
What is the oval window?
Definition
Barrier between the middle and inner ear. Stapes touches it- it leads to vestibule or entrance to cochlea and semicircular canals.
Term
What is he cochlea?
Definition
Looks like a snail shell. Contains organ of corti-translates sounds to nerve impulses
Term
What do the semicircular canals do and how many are there?
Definition
Balance and equilibrium; 3
Term
How many types of hearing loss are there and what are they?
Definition
3; conductive, sensory, central
Term
What is conductive hearing loss?
Definition
Vibrations not getting through- earwax, perforated eardrum, missing bones- some are repairable
Term
What is sensory hearing loss?
Definition
Damage to inner ear or nerve, not usually repairable
Term
What is central hearing loss?
Definition
Brain damage, damage to hearing center. Stroke
Term
What is meniere's disease?
Definition
Degeneration of hair cells in cochlea
Term
What is otitis external?
Definition
Swimmer's ear.
