The circulatory system is the communication super highway for the chemical messengers called
Term
heart
Definition
The driving force of circulatory system is
Term
plasma
Definition
is the straw colored salty liquid that allows the blood to flow.
Term
red blood cells contain?
Definition
hemoglobin which carries oxygen to the cells for cellular respiration. A mature red blood cell has no nucleus.
Term
hemoglobin
Definition
contains iron the combination of iron and oxygen in the hemoglobin is what makes the red blood cells red. This is what we see when we see blood in contact with oxygen.
Term
white blood cells divided into 2 groups
Definition
There are 6 different types of white blood cells divided into two groups: granulocytes and agranulocytes.
Term
Neutrophils
Definition
most common white blood cells. They are the first responders. They respond to invading bacteria and fungi
Term
Basophils
Definition
the least common white blood cells. They release the histamine that causes inflamation, like hives.
Term
Eosinophils
Definition
fight parasites and are indicators of allergic reactions.
Term
monocytes
Definition
are the waste removal system.
Term
Macrophages
Definition
are monocytes that have left the circulatory system to destroy invaders among the cells.
Term
Platelets
Definition
begin the complex process of clotting.
Term
fibrin/fibrin fibers
Definition
trap the blood cells and form a clot that prevents further bleeding.
Term
Arteries
Definition
have thick muscular walls and carry blood away from the heart. When you feel your pulse you are feeling an artery expand and contract as blood is pumped out of the heart.
Term
veins
Definition
are not at as muscular as arteries but they have valves (little flaps) that keep the blood moving back toward the heart. When you donate blood or blood is taken for testing it us usually taken from a vein.
Term
what are capillaries?
Definition
are the smallest blood vessels with walls often only one cell thick. Red and white blood cells can only travel through in single file. These smallest vessels serve all of the cells in your body.
Term
Lymph nodes
Definition
Lymph nodes are small knobs of tissue that trap bacteria and viruses that are traveling in the lymph.
