7.  Explain what happened on the day of Pentecost as exhaustively as possible.

Definition
Pentecost was an O.T. harvest festival
• Lev. 23:15-22
o This passage outlines all 7 pre-exilic feasts setting the time for each to be celebrated.
o Feasts 1,2,3 are taking place in 8 days, then 4 is 50 days, 5,6,7 are in a weeks time
o V 5-passover,6-Unleavened Bread, 10 harvest feast, 16-pentecost, 24 feasts of trumpets, 27 day of atonement, 34 feast of tabernacles.
• Num 28:26-31
o This passage describes what and how to offer on Pentecost.
• Ex. 34:22-the feast of weeks that is the first fruits of the wheat harvest
• Deut. 16:16 the feast of weeks.

Pentecost is a celebration of the harvest: N.T. Pentecost marked the long awaited spiritual harvest.

The day of Pentecost
• Acts 2:3
o A big ball of fire. “tongues as of fire…”

Term
8. Explain everything you can concerning biblical passages that combine some aspect of fire with the Holy Spirit.

Definition
Fire
• Matt 3:11”the Holy Spirit and fire”-people get confused that fire is purification of Holy Spirit, but it’s not. People connect Acts 2:4 with this erroneously…
The purpose of the Fire…
Some say…
• Purification or sanctification of the believer.
• Zeal or enthusiasm of the believer
• Tongues of fire as a sign.
• Judgment with unquenchable fire.
o In proper context any of these could be right; in the wrong context they are wrong. If all are compared to Acts 3 then 3 of them are wrong.
• Matthew 3:7-12-wrath, repentance, cut down and thrown into the fire, the Holy Spirit and fire, burn up the chaff, fire.
o What is the context of what you are reading…
o 1. Brood of vipers
o 2. Wrath
o 3. Need to repent
o 4. Cut down and burn
o 5. ?
o 6. Burned up
In this context “fire” means judgment. But that doesn’t mean in Acts 2:4 it’s the same.
• Some say…
• Holy Spirit was added later to the text
• A breath of fiery judgment
• A twofold baptism
o Given to everyone bringing salvation to the just and judgment to the wicked
OR
o One baptism with two elements: Holy Spirit and fire=purification
• Two separate baptisms:
o In the Holy Spirit for believers
o In fire of judgment at the 2nd coming.
Foreshortening-you see true truth but not exhausted in truth. Luke 4:18-21 (was fulfilled in the hearing), Is. 61:1-2 (the fire part-it isn’t fulfilled)
• Baptisms in HS for the saved, of fire for the condemned.
Term
 9. Explain the importance of Peter healing the lame man to the spread of the gospel.

Definition

 a. There was a lame man, Peter healed saying he couldn’t
b. Jesus healed him through Peter, it was Peter’s faith:
c. The Three ingredients of faith

Action

Knowledge
Mental Assent

• Knowledge- knowledge of a person, place, event, or other reality
• Mental Assent-mentally agreeing that the knowledge is true. Knowledge and Mental assent equal BELIEF
• Action-choosing to respond appropriately based on your belief.
o Knowledge is truth described accurately.
o Without knowledge you can’t have faith; no faith, no salvation.
o The Bible- is describing God accurately to us.
-how he spread the gospel-since people saw the lame man begging for 40 years, they were in awe that he was well. Peter and John then had the chance to share Jesus and how He healed them man through faith.

b. Burial-righteous people came and buried Stephen and they cried out loud to show that the Sanhedrin was wrong in what they were doing. (usually they would have left a criminal out to rot and die).
