South- Rural blacks were poor farmhands, day laborers, wood cuters. cities they worked in factories, lived in appaling poverty. a few skilled jobs such as barbering, shoemaking, and plastering were reserved for black men. they were bored from more than 50 other trades.women worked as cooks. laudresses, and domestics.

schools were segregated, but rich and poor blacks and whites had access to education. school attendance for african americans increased from over 5% to 40% and whites it increased from 20% to 60%. all this costed money so the republicans increased tax rates and state debts.

with the religion aspects more preachers were african american and were well educated.
