1. Avoid excessive "Yes" or "No" questions
2. Avoid phrasing questions in such a way that they inhibit freedom of response
3. Avoid abrupt shifts in topic
4. Avoid talking too much or not enough
5. Avoid concentrating on physical symptoms and etiological factors to the exclusion of the client's feelings and attitudes
6. Avoid providing info too soon
7. Avoid qualifying and hemming and hawing
8. Avoid negativistic or moralistic responses
