Term
Force
Definition
Any push or pull on an object.
Term
Net Force
Definition
The overall force on an object. Forces in the same direction add, forces in opposite directions subtract.
Term
Balanced
Definition
A net force of zero (all forces cancel out) that does not cause an object to accelerate.
Term
Unbalanced
Definition
A non-zero net force (one force is stronger) that causes an object to accelerate.
Term
Force Diagram
Definition
Shows all the forces acting on an object with arrows where the length of the arrow represents the strength.
Term
Momentum
Definition
A force that keeps objects in motion.
Depends on mass (more m = more P)
Depends on velocity (more v = more P)
Term
Newton's Laws
Definition
Isaac Newton's laws that described all motion of objects.
Term
First Law
Definition
Objects in motion stay in motion, objects at rest stay at rest, unless acted on by an unbalanced force.
Term
Second Law
Definition
F=ma
The acceleration of an object depends on the mass and net force. The greater the force, the greater the acceleration. The greater the mass, the less the acceleration.
Term
Third Law
Definition
Forces come in pairs. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Term
Gravity
Definition
Force of attraction between two objects.
Term
Law of Universal Gravitation
Definition
The force of gravity acts between all objects in the universe. The larger the masses, the greater the force. The closer the masses are the greater the force.
Term
Free Fall
Definition
The only force acting on an object is gravity (unbalanced = acceleration). In the absence of air, all objects fall at the same rate.
Term
Terminal Velocity
Definition
When the downwards force of gravity is balanced by the upward force of air resistance, the stops accelerating and moves at a constant (maximum) speed. Depends on velocity, surface area, and mass.
Term
Projectile Motion
Definition
The motion of a projectile (a throws object) is both horizontal and vertical. Two objects (1 dropped vertically, 1 thrown horizontally) will reach the ground at the same time.
Term
Friction
Definition
Force that opposes motion and causes an object to slow down.
Term
Kinetic Friction
Definition
Friction between moving objects.
Term
Static Friction
Definition
Friction between stationary objects.
Term
Sliding Friction
Definition
A kinetic friction that occurs between two surfaces that slide past each other.
Term
Rolling Friction
Definition
A kinetic friction that occurs between a surface and a rolling object.
Term
Fluid Friction
Definition
A kinetic friction that occurs between a surface and a fluid (liquid or gas).
