Orderly, arranged, classical landscape. Clearly defined perspective through use of foreground, background, and middle ground. St. John is writing Revelation surrounded by ruins of ancient Rome. More energy than a Renaissance piece because of strong diagonal lines. Painting is very idealized and meticulously laid out. Moralizing overtone. Subject of painting is balance and order of nature rather than St. John. Poussin was a highly influential French artist.

Dramatic presence because it is elevated above the town. The surrounding environment is very much part of the church. This was more than just a churh, it contained guest quarters, library, and a monestary.

The main focus is on the portal area. Not considered Gothic because it is a different aesthetic. San Fernando is in the niche above the door. Very elaborate in sculptural detail. Ultra-Baroque. Uses classical architectural elements but arranges them in a wild way.

Title: Still life with Quince, Cabbage, Melon and Cucumber.
Date: 1600's
Instead of a bowl of fruit, the fruits are arranged in a new way. Tennaberistic background. Fruit are engaging the viewer instead of receding. Shows textures and details beautifully. Quietism. Spanish trompe l'oeil. Spatial ambiguity.

Propagandistic. Allegorical and large scale references. The dutch on the left are distracted and looking downward. spanish on the right are elevated and more numerous. Their spears are all upright which show more order and strength. The whole scene is very idealized. Excellent control of many figures in a painting.

Painted everyday scenes. Vague references to moralism. He is buying a glass of water. Subject is a poor man but with a sense of dignity shown through his posture and compositional presence. Quite dignity in peasants. Tennaberistic background. Shows many different textures and volumes.

Monumentally huge size canvas. Shows himself painting this painting. Daughter of Royalty is subject but also depicts the daughters maids. The parents are in a mirror in the background. Shows himself as a intellectual and intelligent. Velazquez is fully integrated into the upper class. Done with loose brush strokes in a painterly style.

Flemish painting. Artist of the court. Still involved in Roman Catholicism. Very dramatic. Triptych is unified across all 3 sections. Figures are all very Greek. The left section has much more calmness and restrain. Colors and minute details to texture show it is flemish.

Woman on right is allegory of France. He picks his new wife by looking at paintings of them. Little angels are dragging his armor. Jupiter and Juno are seen above. Peacock is a symbol of love. Very Baroque. King was always at war and could not be bothered by the task of marriage. Political propaganda of the highest order.

Influenced by Carvaggio. Martyrdom scenes were very popular. Counter-reformation piece. Not distracted by background. Figures proceed in picture through use of foreshortening, cropping, and framing. Bart is very humble in painting. Looks like an every day person.

Quietism= by stripping away all of the senses you can contemplate your religion. This is a spanish philosophy. Helps people to understand their faith. Paper in background bears his name. He is clearly dead already. This martyr was sent to rescue imprisoned christians.

Unlike landscapes during the Renaissance, this painting lacks symmetry and has more light/dark contrasts. Space moves backwards more fluidly. Suggestion of passing time, movement, and emotion is shown through the storm.

Same style as Rubens. Charles I was son of a wealthy merchant. Full length portrait shows royalty and importance and style. Head of subject is placed higher than viewers. The hunt is associated with aristocracy. His horse also shows wealth. Horse bows down to Charles.

Questioning which of the senses were superior. In the church sight was of the utmost importance. You can be enlightened through sight. Artists also considered sight to be the greatest.

Increased acceptance of public dissections in the name of science. The church forbade dissections during the Renaissance. They would often do it on criminals. Public spectacle. It is a group portrait with a story.
