Definition
  • Saul's last years—he's asking God “Why did you choose me?” What's the final estimate of this man? He did bad things, he did good things. The issues is not that he wasn't perfect, but when he was confronted by sin, he refuses to repent. That's the issue. He does not deal w/ his sin and therefore, his sin eventually destroys him.

  • David as a fugitive—chosen by God, running for his life. As David is fleeing from Saul, (chapter 22), he finds himself hiding in a cave. Certain people find & help him (brothers and all of his father's household). They help b/c if Saul is after David, then Saul is after his family as well so the family had to escape too.

  • Contrast to Saul—When David becomes king, he's going to consolidate the empire. Very efficient gov't. David will build successful army, great men of God. Identified as the strongest king. When Saul dies, David moves away from the Philistines back to Tribe of Judah

  • At Hebron—David made a covenant w/ his people at Hebron. We aren't sure of how old he was when he was first anointed king.

  • Religious—High priests and the prophets who interact with David; things are going pretty well in terms of religion. The kingdom is established.
