Term

Bacterial cells produce protein for human use? T/F

Definition

True

Term

What is a function of a gene?

Definition

carry instructions for synthesizing protiens!

Term
What is transcription?
Definition
  • occurs in the nucleus
  • When RNA polymerase enzyme binds to th promoter, located at teh start site of a gene, and makes a Mrna that is complementary to the dna gene.
  • RNA differs from DNA in that the sugar is RNA is ribose(not deoxyribose) and the nitrogenous bases are adenine, cytosine, and uracil (**No thymines in RNA)

Term
what is translation
Definition
  • occurs in the cytoplasm o eukaryotic cells and involves mRNA, ribosomes, and trna.
  • Messenger RNA carries the code from the DNA, and ribosomes are the site where amino acids are assembled to synthesize protiens.
  • Transfer RNA(tRNA) carries amino acids, which bind to triplet nucleotide sequences on the mRna called codons.
Term
What is the genetic code?
Definition
used to determine the amino acid coded for by a particular Codon
Term
what is the flow of Dna?
Definition

1. From the DNA sequence

2. to the mRNA transcript

3. To the encoded Protien

Term

Mutations are change to the DNA sequence that can affect protein structure and function. What is a nuetral mutation.

Definition
changes to the DNA that do not result in a different amino acids being incorporated. INsertions or deletions of nucleotides can result in frameshift mutations that change the protein drastically.
Term
how is Recombinant BGH produced?
Definition
placing the gene for growth hormone into plasmids, which then clone the gene by making millinos of copies of it as they replicate themselves inside their bacterial hosts.
Term

What is a Ti plasmid?

Definition
Gene Gun used to inject plants with genes
Term
what is gene therapy
Definition
involves replacing defective genes or their products in an embryo or in the affected adult tissue.
Term

what are the subcellular structures that participate in translation

Definition
mRNA, ribosome, amino acids, tRNAs
Term
what is tRNA?
Definition
it has an anticodon region, which is complementary to the mRNA codon
Term
translation results in the production of___________
Definition
Protien
Term
The RNA polymerase inzyme binds to _______, initiating transcription.
Definition
The promoter sequence
Term

HOw are RNA and DNA similiar?

Definition

both are made up of the nucleotides consisting of a sugar, a phosphate, and a base.

Term
What is the Linnaean cliassification?
Definition
Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.
