Term
Briefly describe the cell membrane.
Definition
Made from a phospholipid bilayer. The consistency is about 50 atoms and has an olive oil like consistency. It also contains a network of proteins such as enzymes, carriers, and pumps.
Term
True or False. Due to the fluidity of the cell membrane, it is difficult to repair small tears without using energy.
Definition
False.
Term
Briefly describe how enzymes work.
Definition
-The enzyme will fit into the active site of the substrate  and modifies it.
-This creates an enzyme-substrate complex. As the reaction is carried out it generates an enzyme-product complex
-The substrate then releases the enzyme unchanged while a product made from the substrate is also released.
-Enzyme then can repeat the process with a new substrate
Term
What are the most important activated carriers and how is the energy stored in each?
Definition
-ATP - energy is stored as a chemical bond
-NADH and NADPH - energy is stored as high energy electrons
Term
Name some properties of amino
Definition
-Some can can carry a charge
-AA chains can contain hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions
-Hydrogen bonds can form between neighboring regions of the chain
-Covalent bonds can form between the R groups of 2 cysteine amino acids to form a disulfide bridge.
Term
What process allows energy to reach the cells?
Definition
Diffusion
Term
Staying true to the first law of thermodynamics, what happens to the energy used by the cell?
Definition
It is lost as heat.
Term
True or False. Enzyme driven chemical reactions occur as a series where the product of a reaction becomes the substrate of the next chemical reaction.
Definition
True
Term
