Cards

Term
Ecology
Definition
The study of organisms and how the interact with other organisms and their physical environment
Term
Ecosystem
Definition
Is a particular area where there are living things (biotic) and non living (abiotic) features such as weather and they have an affect on eachother
Term
Producer
Definition
Make their own food from sunlight or organic molecules. They are also known as autotrophs. An example of this would be a plant such as a tulip. They are at the bottom of the food chain.
Term
Consumer
Definition

A consumer also known as a heterotroph is an organism which gets it's energy from eating other organisms such as plants, animals or insects.

Example would be omnivore, carnivore, herbivore, detrivore

Term
Decomposer
Definition

Gets it's energy from feeding off dead organic matter. They complete the flow of energy.

Example Bacteria or Fungi

Term
Biotic
Definition
Study of all living things within an ecoystem. Needs to be made of atleast one cell.
Term
Abiotic
Definition

Non living things in an ecosystem such as weather and soil.

How it affects the physical environment and the living organisms

Term
Biosphere
Definition
All the living things in the world found in water, on land, in the atmosphere or air
Term
Species
Definition
Group of individuals that are very simliar they can reproduce together
Term
Populations
Definition
Group of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area
Term
Community
Definition
A collection of different populations which all live in the same area
Term
Ecosystem
Definition
Is a defined area where communities live together with their non living environment
Term
Biome
Definition
Is a group of similiar ecosystems found around the world with similiar climate and species
Term
Food Chain
Definition
Series of steps which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten
Term
Food Web
Definition
Links all food chains in an ecosystem together
Term
Trophic Level
Definition
Each step in a food chain or web and each consumer depends on the trophic level below for energy following the 10% rule
Term
Ecological Pyramid
Definition

A diagram which shows the amount of energy or matter contained on each trophic level

Examples: energy, biomass and pyramid of numbers

Term
Climax Community
Definition
Biological Community of plants and animals through the process of ecological succession has reached a steady rate
Term
Forests
Definition
An area with a high density of trees
Term
Ecotone
Definition
An area where two ecosystems overlap which allows for more diveristy among plants and animals
Term
Biodiversity
Definition
Variation among organisms in the biosphere
Term
Old Growth Forest
Definition
Contains trees in varying ages, species and heights. Going through a cycle of life and decay. Lots of large standing dead trees.
Term
Wild Life Tree
Definition
Feeding and housing others and always in some stage of decomposition
Term
Snag
Definition
Standing dead tree that has been identified as endangered habitat. A kind of wildlife tree
Term
Nurse Log
Definition
Like a nursery they help to nurish new trees by allowing them to grow up and out. There are more living matter than those trees still standing
Term
Keystone Species
Definition

Central to the food web of an ecosystem

i.e. Mycorrhyziae

Term
Ecological Succesion
Definition
Constantly changing in response to natural and human disturbances. Series of predictable changes in a community over time.
Term
Primary Succession
Definition
Takes place on surfaces where soil never existed
Term
Secondary Succession
Definition
After a disturbance takes place such as forest fire or logging community interactions tend to restore the ecosystem to it's original state
Term
Bog
Definition
A wetland habitat made of plants that can live in acidic and low nutrient soil. Sphagnum moss is the keystone species.
Term
Common Plants of a Bog
Definition

Bog Rosemary

Labrador Tea

Bog Laurel

Bog Cranberry

Bog Blueberry

Cloudberry

Term
Anthocyanins
Definition
Blue flower pigment
Term
Respiration
Definition
The process which organisms exchange gases
Term
Transpiration
Definition
Water evaporating from leaves of plants after being absorbed through their roots
Term
Evaporation
Definition
Process by which water changes from liquid form to an atmospheric gas
Term
Nutrients
Definition
All the chemical substances which an organism needs to sustain life
Term
Dentrification
Definition
Some soil bacteria converts nitrates into nitrogen gas
Term
Nitrogen Fixation
Definition
SOme bacteria which live on roots of legumes, convert nitrogen gas into ammonia in this process
Term
N
Definition
Mainly found in proteins
Term
P
Definition

In  all DNA molecules

Found in bones and teeth

Term
C
Definition
Key Ingredient of living tissue
Term
BioMass Pyramid
Definition
Total amount of living tissue within a given trophic level
Term
Pyramid of Numbers
Definition
Shows relative number of individual organisms at each trophic level
