Term
address resolution protocol (ARP)
Definition
used to determine a host's MAC address from its ip addrss.also used to view and make changes to ip address to mac address translation tables.
Term
automatic provate IP addressing
Definition
a feature of the windows os that enables DHCP clients to self-configure an IP address and subnet mask automatically when a DHCP server is not available
Term
bridge
Definition
a device that connects tow networks and passes traffic between them based only on the node address so that trafic between nodes on one network does not appear on the other network. for example in ethernet networks it looks at the ethernet address and filters and forwards packets based on te MAC addressess. operate at level #2 of the osi model
Term
broadcast address
Definition
a special network address that redfers to all users on the network. in a tcp/ip network it would be 255.255.255.255. any packet sent o this address will be sent to everyone on the lan
Term
broadcast domain
Definition
the collection of all devices that will recieve each other's ;broadcast frames. a router will not coross a broadcast frames
Term
collision domain
Definition
the group of devices whose frames could potentially collide with one another.
Term
domain name service(DNS)
Definition
a protocal and system tfor mapping ip addresses to user friendly names. it resolveds hoset names to ip addresses and vie versa (with reverse lookups).
Term
dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP)
Definition
a dependable flexible alternative to manual tcp/ip configuration that provides pcs with automatic configuration of the three necessary tcp/ip parameters - Ip addresses subnet mask and default gates way
Term
file transfer protocol
Definition
a protocol designed primarily for transfering data across a network. FTP denotes both a protocol and a utility used for this purpose,. it was created to quickly and efficiently tranfer data files form one host to another witout impactingh the remote host resources
Term
frame
Definition
a defined series of binary data that isthe basic container for a discrete amount of data moving across a network. also called a packet
Term
HTTP
Definition
protocol used for communication between a web server and the web browser
Term
HTTPS:
Definition
the secure version of the protocol used for communicatino between a web server and a web browser
Term
IMAP
Definition
an alternative to pop3, itretrieves e-mail server like pop3. uses tcp/ip prot 143
Term
internet control message protocal (ICMP)
Definition
enables systems on a tcp/ip network to share status and error information. two of the most commone uses of ICMP messages are ping and tacert
Term
IPX/SPX :IPX/DPX (internetwork packet exchange/sequence packet exchange)
Definition
protocol suite developed by novell, primarily for supporting novell netware based networks.
Term
prop3
Definition
designed to overcome the rpoblesms encountedrd with SMTP, in wich wrokstations were not confined to permeanat termanal-balsed connectinos to a mainframe. a pop3 mail server hold the mail in a mail-drop until the workstation is ready to recieve the mail.
Term
Private ip address
Definition
any ip address that can be used on a LAN that is restricted to the LAN and can not be routed to the internet
Term
proxy server
Definition
a type of server that makes a single internet connection and service request on behalf of many users.(internet protection can setup to a cache)
Term
repeater
Definition
a physical layer device that amplifies the signals it recieves on one port and resends it on another port. used to extend the distance of a network segment.
Term
router
Definition
a device connecting seoperate networks that forwards a packet from one network to another based on the network adress for the protocol being used. These devices operate at layer (network)of the osi seven layer model
Term
secure file transfer protocol
Definition
used when you transfer files over an encrypted connectino. it uses an ssh session, wich provides the encryption.
Term
SMTP
Definition
protocol used to send and recieve mail over the internet
Term
SNMP (sinple network managment protocol)
Definition
an internet standard for monitoring and configuring network devices. a network using this protocol is composed of managment systems and agents. (allows you to control the router)
Term
switch
Definition
a device that filters and forwards traffic based on some criteria. a bridge and a router are both examples of switches
Term
tcp/ip (transmission control protocol/ internet protocol)
Definition
a set of communication protocols developed by the u.s. department of defense that enables dissimilar computers to share information over a network
