Puritans founded the Massachusetts Bay Colony for religious reasons. The meetinghouse was used for church services and town meetings. Roger Williams, founder of Rhode Island, set-up a government based on the consent of the people in order to give the settlers the freedom to choose their religion. Anne Hutchison was expelled from the Massachusetts Bay Colony and started a colony in Rhode Island near Roger Williams’ colony.

Definition

New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. Also called the "Breadbasket Colonies".

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania became one of the largest and wealthiest cities in the English colonies. In the mid 1700s, settlers began moving into the area of land between the colonies and the Appalachian Mountains known as the backcountry.He also published Poor Richard’s Almanac and created the lightning rod. Benjamin Franklin contributed to Philadelphia’s social development by starting a firefighter's organization, a hospital, a militia, a library, and a newspaper.  William Penn, the leader of Pennsylvania, was a Quaker who believed in treating all people with justice and fairness.

Settled by the Separatists, or Pilgrims, who left England in order to practice their religion freely.

The Pilgrims had a feast to celebrate their first successful harvest and their survival of the first year’s hardships, which we now celebrate as Thanksgiving.
