FQNs have no significant differences in clinical outcomes - but are drug of choice in a perforated eardrum or tympanic tubes

What is acute otitis externa?
Definition
Inflammation of the external ear canal - break in the skin or ear wax. 90% unilateral

What causes swimmer's ear?
Definition
- S. aureus and/or P. aeruginosa
- Risk - swimming, trauma, exposure to bacteria
- Common in 7-12 years old
- Sx stop 1-3 days after tx, return to water 4-7 days

What are the symptoms of swimmer's ear?
Definition
- Pain - worsened by chewing
- Itching
- Can see discharge
**Canal w/ erythema, mobile tympanic membrane, pain w/ movement of earlobe

What topical analgesics can be used for acute otitis externa?
Definition
- Auralgan - acetic acid
- Antipyrine/Benzocaine
- Sweet oil
**Do not use if tympanic membrane perforated

What antibiotics are used for AOE?
Definition
- Cortisporin otic soln or susp - contains neomycin. Susp is less irritating
- FQN - twice daily dosing, can only use ciprodex for tubes

- Similasan earache
