Practical considerations
Definition
-patient is often awake so be quiet
-wear non-powdered gloves
-drape your mayo in a clear x-ray cassette cover to reduce lint on instruments as this may cause granulomas
-most procedures are done under the microscope so make sure you drape it properly
-if using a portable microscope then it should be brought over on the opposite side of the operative side
Term
Procedural considerations
Definition
-do not allow prep solution to pool around the eye
-irrigate the eye throughout the case with BSS (balanced salt solution)
-trim the eyelashes prior to draping if necessary
-Every procedure on the globe requires the use of an adhesive-backed, clear drape for sterility
-procedures on the eyelids require a head drape over towels
Term
Skin prep
Definition
-Prep from hairline to inferior mandibular border and from the anterior auricular border to beyond the midline
-Start with eyelid, then eyelashes, then brow, and last is skin
-A betadine solution may be put into the conjunctival sac if it's an intraocular case
-dip cotton swabs in prep solution to clean eyelashes and then rinse with sterile water
Term
