Cards

Term
Deep muscles of the back
Definition
Erector spinae (3 divisions: Spinalis, Longissimus, Ileocostalis); all act on the vertebral column, all are innervated by dorsal rami of spinal nerves (PPR)
Term
splenius muscles (2)
Definition

lies deep to the trapezius, fibers course obliquely across the neck; splenius capitis and splenius cervicis

Term
splenius capitis
Definition

Action: Extends head and neck

O: NL, C7-T4; I: MP, SNL

Nerve: PPR C3, C4

Term
splenius cervicis
Definition

O: spinous processes of T3-T4; A: transverse processes C1-C3

Action: extends head and neck; laternal rotation, flexion

Nerve: PPR C5-C6

Term
erector spinae muscles
Definition

lies deep to the serratus posterior/splenius muscles, contains three columns (spinalis, longissimus, ileocostalis), fused inferiorly where they attach to the sacrum and ileum; all act on spinal column

Term
spinalis
Definition
medial column, both superior and inferior attachments are on spinious processes, has lumbar, thoracic, and cervical vertebral levels
Term
Longissimus
Definition
central column, superior attachments are the transverse processes of thoracic and cervical vertebrae, most superior portion attaches to the mastoid process “longissimus capitis”
Term
ileocostalis
Definition
superior attachments are on ribs
Term
thoracolumbar fascia
Definition

deep investing membrane which covers the deep muscles of the back of the trunk; contains the erector spinae; continuous with the nuchal fascia

Term
latissimus dorsi
Definition

partially deep to trapezius

O: spinous processes of T7-12, thoracolumbar fascia, iliac crest, inf. 3-4 ribs; I: bicipital groove of humerus

Action: adducts, extends, rotates arm

Nerve: TD C6-8

Term
trapezius
Definition

large, superificial muscle

O: SNL, EOP, spinous processes of C7-T12, NL; I: spine of scapula, acromion, post. lat. 1/3 of clavicle

Action: adduction, retraction, depression, medial rotation, elevation of scapula; abducts arm

Nerve: APR C3-4 (sensory), SAN (motor) NOT dorsal rami (PPR)

Term
serratus posterior inferior
Definition

very thin muscle, deep to latissimus dorsi, superficial to erector spinae

O:  spinous processes of T11 to L2; A: inferior borders of ribs 9-12, lateral to their angels

Action: Depresses lower ribs, aiding in exhalation

Nerve: Intercostal nerves T9-12

Term
serratus posterior superior
Definition

deep to rhomboid muscles, superficial to splenius, erector spinae

O: NL, SSL, spinous processes C7-T3; I: ribs 2-5

Action: elevates ribs, aiding in inhalation

Nerve: intercostal T1-4

Term
rhomboid major
Definition

deep to trapezius

O: spinous processes T2-T5, SSL; I: medial border of scapula

Action: adducts, rotates, fixes scapula; depresses glenoid cavity

Nerve: dorsal scapular nerve

Term
rhomboid minor
Definition

deep to trapezius

O: NL, spinous processes of C7-T1 ;I: root of scapular spine

Action: adducts, rotates, fixes scapula

Nerve: dorsal scapular nerve

Term
levator scapulae
Definition

O: transverse processes C1-C4; I: sup. med. border of scapula

Action: elevates scapula, rotates glenoid cavity

Nerve: DS nerve (motor); C3-4 APR (sensory)

Term
semispinalis capitis
Definition

deep to the splenius, medial to longissimus capitis

O: transverse processes of C7-T7; I: between SNL, INL

Action: extends head and neck

Nerve: PPR C1-8

Term
longissimus capitis
Definition

lateral to semispinalis capitis

O: transverse processes of C, T1-T5 I: mastoid process

Action: extends/laterally bends spine, head, neck

Nerve: dorsal rami

Term
rectus capitis posterior minor
Definition

peripheral to suboccipital triangle

O: posterior tubercle of C1; I: INL (medial)

Action: extends head and neck

Nerve: suboccipital (PPR C1)

Term
rectus capitis posterior major
Definition

suboccipitial triangle

O: spinous process of C2; I: INL

Action: extends, rotates atlantooccipital joint

Nerve: Suboccipital (PPR C1)

Term
obliquus capitis superior
Definition

suboccipital triangle

O: transverse process of C1, I: between SNL,INL Action: Extends atlantoaxial joint, head rotation Nerve: Suboccipital nerve (PPR C1)

Term
