WHAT IS SUCCESSION?

Definition
Term used to describe changes of an ecosystem overtime in the species that occupy a particular area
Term

FIRST STAGE OF SUCCESSION

Definition
Colonisation; by pioneer species.
Term

WHAT ARE PIONEER SPECIES?

Definition

They produce lots of wind dispersed seeds/spores to reach isolated conditions easily

Rapid germination of seeds - no dormancy

Ability to photosynthesis - not dependent on animals

Fix nitrogen from atmosphere because there is little nutrients in the soil

Tolerant to extreme conditions

Term

WHAT HAPPENS IN SUCESSION?

Definition
At each stage, the soil becomes more nourished so more species can survive. The new species outcompete the old so a new community is formed
Term

SOIL PRODUCTION

Definition
Weathering of rock produces sand/soil.  As plants decompose, they release nutrients to support community
Term

DECIDIOUS

Definition
Plants that shed all leaves together in one season
Term

CLIMAX COMMUNITY

Definition

Final stage of succession

stable state

balanced equilibrium

animals and plants

Term

HOW DO ANIMALS GET INTRODUCED?

Definition
The plants provide food for them and habitats
Term

WITHIN CLIMAX COMMUNITIES

Definition
Dominant plant and animal species
Term

DURING SUCCESSION

Definition

Non living environment becomes less hostile

greater number and variety of habitats

increased biodiversity

more complex food webs

increased biomass

Term

SECONDARY SUCCESSION

Definition

Due to land clearing - forest fires/agriculture

More rapid - spores/seeds alive in soil

Doesn't begin with pioneer species

begins with species from other succesional stages

Term

STAGE 2

Definition

Primary colonisers

Pioneer species

Hostile conditions

Low biodiversity

Term

STAGE 1

Definition
Barren land
Term

STAGE 3

Definition
Secondary colonisers - outcompete primary, soil more hospitable more species
Term

STAGE 4

Definition
Tertiary colonisers - outcompete secondary, more species, more diverse more hospitable
Term

STAGE 5

Definition

Scrubland

small trees and shrubs

Term

STAGE 6

Definition

Climax community

Equilibrium

Term

CONSERVATION

Definition
Management of the earths natural resources so maximum use can be made from them in the future
Term

MAIN REASONS FOR CONSERVATION

Definition

Ethics - other species should co exist with us

economic - big gene pool - millions of subatances with possible value

cultural - inspiration to artists, writers, poets

Term

BAD POINTS OF CLIMAX COMMUNITIES

Definition

Many species that existed before are no longer present in them

habitats have disappeared

out competed

Term

HOW TO CONSERVE HABITATS

Definition
Manage succesion that prevents the change to the next stage
