Surface along which rocks move when they pass their elastic limit and break.

Earthquake: 

Vibrations produce when rocks break along the fault.

Normal Fault: 

 Break in rocks caused by tension forces, were rock above the fault surface moves down relative to the rocks below the fault surface.

Reverse Fault: 

Break in rocks caused by compressive forces, were rock surface moves upward relative to the rock below the fault surface.
