Cards Term Total Rise Definition The height from finished floor to finished floor. Term Headroom Definition The vertical distance measured from the nosing to the ceiling above. The minimum headroom height is 6'-8". Term Stringer Definition The board that gets notched for the risers and treads, and when the stairs are assembled it carries the stair system. Otherwise known as the "Carriage". Term Minimum Width Definition 36" is the minimum width for a stairway. Term Total Run Definition # of treads X size of tread. Term Tread Definition The horizontal piece applied to each step. (the part you step on !) Term Nosing Definition The portion of the tread that extends beyond the riser. (allows for toe room when climbing the stairs.) Term Handrail Definition The grab rail applied to every stairway for safety. (34"-38"above nosings.) Term Riser Definition The vertical piece of each step. Term Tread Thickness Definition The thickness that needs to be subtracted from the bottom of the stringer during stair layout.
