Medicalization of deviance
Definition
this society and others (France and Germany for example) are very friendly towards explanations that place the blame for our ills – depression being one such ill – place the blame on something medical.  We like when we are told take a pill and chill.  This has significant implications for social troubles like drug abuse, alcoholism, violence and others.
Term
Capitalism is the cause
Definition
So our drug companies play off of our fears in drug ads, our medical establishment gears up to treat us with drugs and may downplay therapy, and even if we do seek therapy we may find ourselves in cognitive-behavioral programs that help reinforce the idea that it is inside of us that a problem rests, hence we are the fix.  Are these companies trying to help or trying to capture market share, thus profit from our pain?
Term
Gendering deviance
Definition
treatments for depression fall disproportionally on women.  They are diagnosed more often with depression and seek treatment more often.  A sociologist would ask why do women get so many more diagnosis for depression and does the medical field over treat women, or treat them differently than men?
