Term
Tyroxine sodium
Definition
Exogenous T4 used in treatment of hypothyroidism
-less intense and longer acting c.f. T3-analogues and so generally safer
Term
Liothyronine sodium
Definition
Exogenous T3 for treatment of severe hypothyroidism - more intense and so shorter acting and less safe c.f. T4-analogues
Term
Sodium / potassium iodine
Definition
Given IV / oral for tx of hypothyroidism
Term
Thioureylenes
Definition
Class of drugs used in the treatment of hyperthyroidism - inhibit thyroperoxidase activity and so decr. iodination of tyrosine on thyroblobin
-also decr. thyroid gland vascularity and so often given before surgery
e.g. carbimazole, methimazole
Term
Carbimazole
Definition
A thioureylene used in the treatment of hyperthyroidism - inhibits thyroperoxidase activity and so dec. iodination of tyrosine on thyroglobin
-also decr. thyroid gland vascularity
NB: prodrug - it is metabolised to methimazole
Term
Methimazole
Definition
A thioureylene used in the treatment of hyperthyroidism - inhibits thyroperoxidase activity and so dec. iodination of tyrosine on thyroglobin
-also decr. thyroid gland vascularity
Term
Iodine
Definition
High doses acutely can be used to treat hyperthyroidism - mechanism not well understood
-decr. thyroid gland vascularity and so often given before surgery
Term
131 I
Definition
radioactive iodine - gamma and beta emitter -used in treatment of hyperthyroidism
Term
Exogenous insulin
Definition
For the treatment of type I diabetes mellitus and some type II.
Always givin by injection, never orally.
Term
Sulphonylureas
Definition
Oral insulin secretagogues - stimulate insulin secretion by blocking K+ channels on beta-cell membrane
-used to treat indv. w. type II diabetes mellitus
e.g. tolbutamide, glibenclamide, glimepiride
Term
Tolbutamide
Definition
A sulphonylurea oral insulin secretagogue - stimulates insulin secretion by inhibiting K+ channel on beta-cell membrane
-1st generation so only stimulates SUR1-R ie. only affects beta-cell K+channels
NB: rarely used now
Term
Glibenclamide, glimepiride
Definition
Sulphonylurea oral insulin secretagogues - stimulate insulin secretion by inhibiting K+ channel on beta-cell membrane
-2nd generation so stimulate SUR1 and SUR-2 so side effects but more potent
-used to treat indv. w. type II diabetes mellitus
Term
Metformin
Definition
A biguanides insulin sensitizer
-sensitises tissue to low levels of endogenous insulin
-used to treat indv. w. type II diabetes mellitus
