Definition
An avascular form of connective tissue consisting of extracellular fibres embedded in matrix.

Heavy weight-bearing- more amount of collagen that is inextensible

Small-weight bearng- less collagen fibres but most are elastic.

Definition
(1) Cartilage allows smoother articular movement of joints.
(2) Supports soft tissues
(3) Allows growth of bones.

What are the 3 TYPES of cartilage? (3)

What do they contain or do? (3)
Definition
(1) Hyaline Cartilage- Most common form and contains a lot of collagen fibres ( found articular surfaces of joints)
(2) Elastic - Contains fewer collagen fibres but most of them are elastic (i.e. ear)
(3) Fibrocartilage- Contains a limited number of cells but a lot of collagen fibres (i.e. intervertebral discs)
