Term
Bony Support of Shoulder:
Definition
Sternum, Clavicle, Scapula, Humerus
Term
purpose for clavicle
Definition

-allows for additional ROM

-prevents anterior displacement of the scapula

-weakest at distal third

Term
Angle of inclination
Definition

-angle formed between humeral shaft and humeral head.

-typically between 130-150 degrees

-need x-ray to measure accuratly

Term
Angle of retroversion
Definition

-relationship between axis of elbow joint and GH joint.

(Humeral head and epicondyle)

Term
Sternoclavicular joint ligaments:
Definition

-ant/post SC ligament

-costoclavicular ligament

-interclavicular ligament

Term
Sternoclavicular degress of freedom:
Definition

-elevation/depression

-protraction/retraction

-anterior/posterior rotation

Term
acromioclavicular joint support:
Definition

-AC ligament

-coracoacromial ligament

-coracoclavicular ligament (breaks down into the conoid, and trapezius)

Term
Glenohumeral Joint, degrees of freedom:
Definition

-3 degrees of freedom: int/ext, flex/ext, abd/add

-ball and socket joint

-deepend by labrum

Term
Glenohumeral Joint gets stability from:
Definition

-SGHL

-MGHL

-IGHL

-coracohumeral ligament

-joint capsule

Term
Scapular muscles:
Definition
Rhomboids, teres minor, levantor scapulae, trapezius, seratus anterior
Term
GH joint muscles:
Definition
Rotator cuff, deltoid, pec major, lats, triceps, biceps, coracobrachialis
Term
Force Couple is defined as:
Definition

coordination between dynamic and isometric contraindications of opposing muscle groups to perform a movement.

-Produces joint compression, centers humeral head

Term
Scapulothoracic Rhythm:
Definition
the combination of the glenohumeral and scapulotoracic joints to produce full 180 degrees of motion.
Term
Scapular Movements:
Definition

-Elevation/depression

-protraction/retraction

-upward/downward rotation

Term
Glenohumeral movements:
Definition

-flexion/extension

-abd/add

-int/ext rotation

-horizontal abd/add

Term
Wind up phase of throwing:
Definition

begins as soon as motion starts. Gets the upper and lower body to work together. Hand break at hands, and step back with foot.

-Establishes rhythm.

-positions segements of the body to produce forward propulsion of the body.

Term
Early cocking phase of throwing:
Definition

hand break going to the start of the throw.

Shoulder 90 degrees abd, 30 degrees horz abd, 90-120 degrees of internal rotation

Term
Late Cocking position:
Definition

Max amount of external rotation, shoulders in line with target. Shoulder 90 degrees abd, neutral horz abd, 160 degrees external rotation.

-trunk rotates forward, scapula retracts, elbow flex, wrist extended, leg rotated toward traget.

Term
Late cocking positon precautions:
Definition
If the shoulder drags there is more of a shear force on the shoulder.
Term
Acceleration phase:
Definition

Scapula protracts, shoulder int rot and horz add, elbow extends, forearm pronates, wrist flexes.

Starts follow through and internal rotation.

Max amount of torque on shoulder in this phase.

Term
Decceleration and Followthrough:
Definition

Shoulder continues to int rot, and hor add. Elbow flexes and body moves forward.

Want lower half of the body to become square, trunk flexed, shoulders almost parallel to the ground.

Term
Total arc of motion in throwers:
Definition
Should see 180 degrees. you will usually see more ext rot than int rot with throwers.
Term
Shoulder static restriants:
Definition

-capsule

-ligaments

-labrum

Term
Shoulder dynamic restraints:
Definition

-muscles

-tendons

Term
SC Joint Sprain. Mech? s/s?
Definition

-falling on an outstretched hand or direct blow

-pain with joint glides and active protratcion/retraction of scapula

Term
AC Joint Sprain. Mech?
Definition

-Lands on outstretched arm.

-Blow to acromium process driving inferiorly.

-Blow to clavicle, or acromium

Term
AC joint sprains. S/s?
Definition

-pain at distal clavicle, ac joint, anterolateral neck, scapula, lateral deltoid.

-"Piano key" sign

Term
GH Instability results from?
Definition

result of ligamentous or laberal pathology, capsular instability, or muscular weakness.

-need to strengthen rotator cuff muscles

Term
Anterior Instability of GH invloves? Mech?
Definition

laxity of ant stabilizing structurse: MGHL, IGHL

(primarily the anterior IGHL)

-Weakness of teh rotator cuff muscles.

Mech: excessive ext rot and abd of humerus

Term
Bankart Lesion? Tests?
Definition

Anterior inferior tear of the labrum due to the IGHL being avulsed.

-Pain, crepitus with humeral head against ant labrum with glide test, load and shift, ext rot test.

Term
Hill-Sachs Lesion:
Definition
bony defect on posterior superior side of humerus like a bone bruise. Caused by impact of humeral head on glenoid fossa as humerus attempts to relocate.
Term
Posterior Instability Mech?
Definition

Int rot with longitudunal force to humerus (often due to repetitive microtrauma)

Leads to weakness of the subscapularis muscel and damage of the coracohumeral and posterior IGHL.

-Rare. Reverse Hillsachs lesion.

Term
Impingment Causes? s/s?
Definition

-Anatomical variations, fatigue from overuse, decreased strength, poor scapular biomechanics.

s/s: Pain with overhead motions through arc.

Term
Subacromial impingment s/s:
Definition

-Decreased upward rotation

-increased anterior tilt.

-Increased protraction

-Posterior capsule tightness.
