Visual evidence: This piece proves that Arnolfini had a lot of money by what he was wearing and by the elaborate clothing the two figure are wearing. The background was also not a church which was typical for this time period which was the Renaissance in Burgundy and Flanders. There is a dog at the bottom of the painting. There are clogs on the left hand side of the painting and they have to do with the ceremony.

Significance: The bed is also open well the cloth covering it is and she also appears to be pregnant. This represents a visual wish of fertility and marriage. The mirror in the back of the composition is clearly someone painting so potentially that is Jan Van Eyck in the mirror painting the composition. The green she is wearing almost makes her pop out because it is her wedding day. The red bed almost acts as a frame for her. This piece is clearly for Arnolfini and his wife that is the purpose of the painting. A lot of the pieces from this time period is religious piece that we have studied but this one is not at all besides they are getting married.

Identification: Jan Van Eyck created this piece in 1434. It was created during the Renaissance in burgundy and Flanders.

Visual Evidence: No one is exactly sure who this figure is, some say it is a self portrait of the painter himself and some say she was just a figure he painted. She has a gentle smile and her hands are folded.  The background also has roads that lead you to the main viewer who is clearly the women in the front. She also has an outdoor background but is sitting. Is she sitting on a hill? Or is that a background that he made up after?

Significance:  She was looking directly out at the viewer and at time this was a big deal because women were not allowed to look directly at men and if a man was looking at this composition she would be looking right at them. Also her eyes seem to follow you wherever you go which is weird because her eyes aren't moving and this was a big innovation back in this time period which was The High Renaissance.

Identification: The Monalisa was created in 1503-6 by Leonardo Da Vinci.

Visual Significance: The piece was used before he had to make the David sculpture a head on kind of angle because otherwise he would look very thin. The figure has a contripasto pose and has facet cut eyes. His head and hands are also enormous compared to the rest of him. This is a pretty typical sculpture but the fact that the marble was hard for all other artists makes it unique. You can tell it was originally made of marble because it has a support in the back.

Significance: Michelangelo sculpted David out of a piece of marble that was very hard to sculpt with. Other artists had abandoned the piece and he proved that he was so good that he made a beautiful piece out of the marble no other artists wanted to use. He wanted to prove how good he really was so he made this sculpture

Identification: David was sculpted by Michelangelo in 1504.

Visual Evidence: This piece has a continuous narration but it is still two separate moments in time. Clearly this piece is Adam and Eve when they ate the forbidden fruit. It is interesting that the serpent is female. On the left the devil or serpent is handing them the fruit and on the right the serpent is making them realize that they are naked and they are starting to cover themselves up. The background looks very unrealistic almost like he colored it in with pen. In the first scene the serpent is naked as well as the figure but in the second scene she has clothes on as well. There is also no trees or any form of life in the background this was the only tree in the composition.

Significance:  Some parts of this composition are unique in that the serpent is a women and that two scenes are shown in one piece but these pieces come up a lot in the high Renaissance period. The important part of this piece is the fact that in the first scene they are eating the fruit and in the second scene they are embarrassed because they are naked.

Identification: The fall of man piece was created by Michelangelo in 1510.

Visual Evidence: This piece has two figures at the focal point the one on the left with the fancier clothes than the other is clearly rich and has traveled around the world. The one on the right is his religious advisor and he is in very dark clothing. he has been many places and he is trying to show that by putting his trinkets out for the viewer to see. He has many mathematical objects. Hans is also showing off his skill especially with that awkward object in the front. The green background creates a contrast for the viewer so that the figures and the objects stand out.

Significance: of this piece is for both the model and the photographer to show off because the viewer can clearly see all of the objects the well off man has and the fact that he has a religious advisor. The photographer was showing off his photography skills.

Identification: This piece was created in 1533 by Hans Holbein
