Term
Two reasons for conducting scientific investigations.
Definition
- Establish Procedures
- Improving Quality of Life
Term
Quantative Data
Definition
data can be counted or measured
Term
Hypothesis
Definition
explantation formulated to answer the questions being investigated
Term
Steps to form a hypothesis...
Definition

1. Identify the problem

2. Ask questions

3. Formulate a hypthesis

Term
Order of a scientific argument?
Definition

1. Identify the problem

2. Ask questions

3. Form a hypothesis

4. Data Collection and Experimentation

5. Analysis

6. Conclusion

Term
Steps to collect data...
Definition

1. Observation (direct or indirect)

2. Measurements

3. Samples (data from a subset of population)

4. Organization (tables/charts)

Term
Experimentation
Definition
comparing the control group and the experimental group.
Term
Analysis
Definition
researchers must determine if the data is reliable and whether it supports the hypothesis
Term
How do scientific arguments change overtime?
Definition
  1. subjective bias
  2. duplicated results
  3. better data colelction due to technology
Term
Why is scientific research is dependent on technology?
Definition

1. Data is recorded in numerical form

2. Describes mathematical relationships

3. Data is related by graphs and emperical formulas.

Term
Mathematics and Science has increased in the corporate world because...
Definition

1. intranet/internet

2. software of binary ditigal technology

3. fiber optics

Term
How does improved techbology lead to better scientific explanation?
Definition
Improved technology allows for new explanations, such as smaller increments of time and length so that more precise data can be collected.
Term
Deductive Reasoning
Definition

a method whereby conclusions follow from general principles

(leads to a specific conclusion)

Ex.  1. All men are mortal.

       2. Sultan is a man.

Conclusion: Sultan is mortal.

Term

Inductive Reasoning

Definition

a method of arriving at general principles from specific facts

(inductive reasoning relies on preponderance of information that leads to a certain degree of confidence in a conclusion)

Ex.  1. I observed the Sun setting this evening.

       2. I have observed the Sun set daily, hundreds of times in my lifetime.

Conclusion:  The Sun sets every day.
