Term

Crust

Definition

Depth: 5-25 miles

Temperature: up o 930 miles

The crust is composed of two rocks. Continental crust is mostly granite. The oceanic crust is basalt. Basalt is much denser than the granite. Because of this less dense continents ride on denser oceanic plates.

Term

Mantle

Definition

Depth: 1,800 miles

Temperature: up to 5430 degrees f

The Mantle is the largest layer of the Earth. The middle mantle is composed of very hot dense rock that flows like asphalt under a heavy weight. The movement of the middle mantle(asthenosphere) is the reason that crustal plates of the Earth move. The lithosphere is the uppermost rocky portion of the mantle.

Term

Outer Core

Definition

Depth: 1,400 miles

Tempurature: 6,500 Degrees F

Outer core is so hot that the metals in it are liquid form. The outer core is composed of melted metals of nickels and iron.

Term

Inner Core

Definition

Depth: 800 miles

Temperature:up to 7,230 Degrees f

The inner core of the Earth has temperatures and presusures so great that the metals are squeezed together and are not able to move about like a liquid, but are forced to vibrate in place like a solid.
