Science 10 Vocabulary
Learning vocabulary is a very important part of learning a language. The more words I know, the more will be able to understand what I hear and read. This is key to my success in Science 10.

Term
Manipulated Variable
Definition

condition deliberately changed in an experiment

(Changing)

Term
Simple Microscope
Definition
Only have one lens. They work like magnifying glasses that you have used. Their limitation was the small amount of magnification they produced.
Term
Compound Microscope
Definition
deals with a microscope having more then one lens
Term
Magnification
Definition

is defined as the apparent size of an object, calculated as the product of the magnifying powers of the objective lens and the eyepiece

Term
Field of View
Definition
is the entire area that you see when you look through the microscope
Term
Contrast
Definition
the ability to see differences between structures due to differences in their capacity to absorb light
Term
Resolution
Definition
It is the ability to distinguish between two structures that are very close together
Term
Electron Microscope (EM)
Definition
a microscope that uses a beam of electrons to produce images of fine detail
Term
Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM)
Definition
an EM in which the image is formed by a beam of electrons that passes through a very thin section of a fix and stained specimen
Term
Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)
Definition
an EM in which a three-dimensional image is formed by electrons bouncing off the surface of the specimen
Term
Spontaneous Generation
Definition
the idea that life could emerge spontaneously from non-living matter
Term
Francesco Redi
Definition
An Italian physician and poet, questioned the belief that maggots appeared spontaneously from raw meat. Instead, he believed that flies laid their eggs in the meat.
Term
John Needham
Definition
Suggested there was a life force that produced spontaneous generation. He boiled chicken broth and put it in a flask and  sealed it.
Term
Lazzaro Spallanzani
Definition
An Italian priest and scientist, refuted Needham’s claim and instead proposed that there were micro-organisms in the air that were responsible for the new growth.
Term
Louis Pasteur
Definition
A French chemist. designed an experiment to test whether sterile nutrient broth could spontaneously generate microbial life. To do this, he set up two experiments. In both, Pasteur added nutrient broth to flasks, bent the necks of the flasks into S shapes, and then boiled the broth to kill any existing microbes.
Term
Robert Brown
Definition
Discovered nucleus in the plant cell
Term
Matthias Jakob Schleiden
Definition
a German botanist who believed that all plants were made of cells and contained a nucleus
Term
Theodor Schwann
Definition
A German animal physiologist who believes that animals cell contain nucleus and made of cell
Term
Cell Theory
Definition

a. All organisms are made up of cells

•Unicellular

•Multicellular

b. The cell carries out the basic function of an organism

c. New cells are not created they come from the division of existing cells

Term
Gene Mapping
Definition
Determines the relative position of genes on chromosomes
Term
Open System
Definition
exchanges matter and energy with the environment
Term
Closed System
Definition
exchanges energy only
Term
Cell
Definition
Smallest functional unit
