MOre likely to be used on elderly people as temazepam is also more likely to be used on the elderly as opposed to diazepam and alprazolam because lorazepam and temazepam do not have any active metabolites adn are directly biotransformed into inactive glucuronide conjugates so they dont last as long in the body.

medium acting

Term
temazepam claim to fame? BDZ
Definition

nocurnal insomnia and anesthetic premedication (note that lorazepam can also be used for these same reasons) Can also be used for anxiety disorders. MOre likely to be used on elderly people as temazepam is also more likely to be used on the elderly as opposed to diazepam and alprazolam because lorazepam and temazepam do not have any active metabolites adn are directly biotransformed into inactive glucuronide conjugates so they dont last as long in the body.

short acting

Term
buspirone claim to fame?
Definition
buspirone is an anxiolytic drug. However, it is only used when the pt. does not respond to SSRIs/SNRIs. Note: that it is not used to treat severe anxiety, panic disorders, and acute anxiety attack Buspirone think: "i am less anxious on the bus" it works as it is a partial 5-HT1A agonist, so it reduces excessive serotonin transmission. It does take 3-7 days to see initial effects adn can take 3-4 weeks to see optimal effects so it is delayed onset adverese effects: DD = dizziness and drowsiness
Term
what are the 2 short acting BDZs?
Definition
triazolam midazolam
Term
what BDZs do not have active metabolites?
Definition

think: "outside the liver"

Oxazepam

Tremazepam

Lorazepam

They are metabolized extrahepatically and do not form active metabolites. They are directly biotransformed into inactive glucuronide conjugates (may be preferable in the elderly)
