Term
Bradykinin
Definition
Polypeptide element of the kinin protein system appears to be the most abundant and potent pain-producing chemical.

Others are prostoglandins, histamine, hydrogen + potassium ions. These bind with nocioceptors
Term
Pain occurs from the following stimuli
Definition
Biological, mechanical, thermal, electrical, chemical
Term
A-delta fibers
Definition
myelinated, transfer impulses FAST.

Acute Pain
Term
C-fibers
Definition
Unmyelinated, transfer impulses SLOWER.

Chronic Pain
Term
Endorphins
Definition
Found in the brain and spinal chord.

Released from brain in response to afferent noxious stimuli whereas those released from the spinal chord are in response to efferent stimuli.
Term
Acute Pain
Definition
Sudden onset.

localized and usually temporary

Less than 6 months and has an identifiable cause.

3 types: Somatic, Visceral,Referred
Term
Somatic Pain
Definition
from receptors in the skin or close to surface of the body.

Sharp or localized, dull or diffuse

Accompanied by vomiting and nausea
Term
Visceral Pain
Definition
Comes from body organs.

Dull and poorly localized due to low number of nocioceptors

Sensitive to stretching, inflammation, and ischemia

Accompanied by vomiting, hypotension, restlessness and nausea
Term
Referred Pain
Definition
Pain that is percieved in an area distant from the site of the stimuli.

Common with visceral pain
Term
Chronic Pain
Definition
Longer than six months

Doesnt always have identifiable cause

Lowers the pain threshold as a result of the depletion of serotonin and endorphin levels in the neurons. This can lead to depression, irritablity, and sometimes suicide

4 types: Recurrent, Ongoing time-limited, Chronic nonmalignant, Chronic intractable nonmalignant pain syndrome
Term
Recurrent Actue Pain
Definition
Migraine Pain
Term
Ongoing time-limited Pain
Definition
Burn Pain
Term
Chronic nonmalignant Pain
Definition
None life-threatening pain that nevertheless persists beyond the expected time

EX: lower back pain
Term
Chronic intractable nonmalignant pain syndrome
Definition
Is similar to simple chronic nonmalignant pain but is characterized by the person’s inability to cope well with the pain and sometime results in physical and social defects
Term
Central Pain
Definition
Pain originating in the brain, most commonly in the thalmus
Term
Phantom Pain
Definition
syndrome that follows amputation of body part, but pain persists
Term
Psychogenic Pain
Definition
Pain that experienced
In the absence of any measurable cause

It is thought that emotional needs prompt the pain
Sensation. Psychogenic pain is real, and much produce
Physical changes such as muscle cramping.
Term
Pain Tolerance
Definition
the amount of pain a person can endure before outwardly responding to it
