From the Church of Santiago de Compostela, Spain

Romanesque, 1078-1122

-Was an important stop on the Pilgramage Route (it was said that the body of St. James was buried here)

-Pilgrams entered through the large double doors at the front.

-Compound piers with attached half columns on all four sides support the barrel vault.

Abbey Church of Conques, France.

Late 9th Century

-Relic holds the skull of St. Foy

-She was a Virgin Martyr (meaning that she passed away because of her religous beliefs)

-It was said that she was burned, then a dove from heaven came down to put the fire out.

-Monks stole the relic from her original shrine of Agen.

-Left to Right, portrays the story of Adam and Eve.

-Depicts the second coming of Christ

-In Christ's hand, he holds a book that says "I am the light of the world."

-"Alpha and Omega" are above his head. Alpha, Omega- first/last letters of the Latin alphabet. Shows that Christ is the ruler of everything.

-Depicts a series of bad dreams the king had about tax relief

-In the fourth illustration, the king makes a promise to God that he will relieve taxes for the next 7 years.

-Hildegard was a highly educated woman.

-Composed music, highly eductated in natural science.

-One of the few woman who performed an exorcism.

-Had a vision about an "intense, fiery light, flashing intensely, came from the open vault of heaven and poured through my whole brain."

-Had her scribe, Volmar writes to her dictation.
