Definition
1754-1763 - War between Britain and France (and Indians) over land - Ohio River Valley. Cost to British was huge putting them deeply in debt.

Issued by King George III - no colonial settlements west of Appalachian Mts. (reserved for Indian hunting grounds) Kin could not afford to protect colonists from conflicts with the Natives - angered colonists greatly

Definition
March 1765 - tax imposed by British on colonists - required to pay a tax on all printed matter to pay down debt from the French and Indian War. Angry colonists tore down the royal governor's house, burned tax office - Britain repealed after one year.

June 1767 - British tax on goods imported to colonies (paint, lead, glass, tea, etc.) to pay F & I War debt - colonist angrey and boycotted goods - repealed in 1770

March 1770- Bristish soldiers sent to Boston to keep order and ensure taxes were paid - crowd gathers outside Customs House - rocks and snowballs thrown at soldiers - 5 colonists killed

December 1773 - colonists' angry reaction to Tea Act - colonists dressed as Mohawks dummped 343 cases of valuable tea into Boston Harbor

March 1774 - King George's angry reaction to Boston Tea Party - 1. closed port of Boston (no business) 2. No town meetings (no self government) 3. forced colonists to house and feed British soldiers

April 1775 - rode from Boston to Lexington/Concord to warn citizens that the British were on their way in search of colonial arms (Sam Adams and John Hancock)

April 19, 1775 - the shot heard 'round the world - first shots of the Revolutionary War are fired on Lexington Green - British march on to Concord where they are forced to retreat (without colonial arms) back to Boston

May 1775 - delegarwes from colonies meet again to establish a colonial army and name George Washington as its leader

Battle of Bunker Hill
Definition
June 1775 - 3 charges were fought for control of the hills around Boston - Americans hold off 2 charges but ran out of ammunition and lose the third charge -Don't fire 'til you see the whites of their eyes! Gen. Israel Putnam - British win the battle but British have heavy losses. Sends the message that the Americans will fight hard for their freedom.
