Term
Pharynx (throat)
Definition
tubelike structure extending from the base of the skull to the esophagus; pathway for the respiratory and digestive tracts; made of muscle and divided into nasopharynx, oropharynx, and laryngopharynx
Term
Nasopharynx
Definition
upper part of the pharynx (throat); contains pharyngeal tonsils called adenoids when they become enlarged
Term
Oropharynx
Definition
part of the pharynx (throat) that lies between the soft palate and the hyoid bone; contains palatine tonsils (most commonly removed) and lingual tonsils (rarely removed)
Term
Laryngopharynx
Definition
lower part of the pharynx
Term
Larynx (voicebox)
Definition
hollow muscular organ forming an air passage to the lungs and holding vocal cords; positioned between the root of the tongue and the upper end of the trachea; forms part of the airway to the lungs; produces the voice
Term
Thorax (chest)
Definition
structure of the thoracic cavity; divided by the pleura (part occupied by lungs) and mediastinum (part occupied by the esophagus, trachea, large blood vessels, and heart); brings about inspiration and expiration
Term
Trachea (windpipe)
Definition
extends from the larynx to the primary bronchi; furnishes part of the open airway to the lungs
Term
Alveoli
Definition
sacs that serve as primary gas exchanges
Term
Lungs
Definition
air distribution and gas exchange
Term
Diaphragm
Definition
primary muscle that contracts during inspiration
Term
Bronchi
Definition
distribute air to the lung's interior
Term
Nose
Definition
provides passageway for air traveling to and from the lungs, filters air, aids speech, and makes possible the sense of smell
Term
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Definition
condition combining emphysema, bronchiectasis, and chronic bronchitis, gas exchange has become impaired due to alveoli dysfunction; caused by extensive smoking; symptoms are barrel chest, frequent coughing w/ increased secretions, dyspnic breathing
Term
Pneumonia
Definition
inflammation of alveoli and bronchiole (lung tissue) due to infective chemical agents, build-up of fluids and secretions in lung tissue (consolidation), impaired gas exchange due to increased secretions; symptoms include dyspenia (shortness of breath), cough with sputum, fever, chills, chest pains
Term
Asthma
Definition
narrowing or obstruction of small airways due to inflammation and secretions; caused by allergens, cold air, chemical exposure, exercise, anxiety; symptoms include dyspnea (dec resp rate), coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, asthmaticus
Term
Atelectasis
Definition
partial lung collapse from compression due to fluid build-up in the pleural space, normally between the diaphragm and the base of the lungs; caused by lack of chest expansion (commonly seen in post-operative and immobile patients); symptoms include decreased oxygenation and chest pain
Term
Pneumothorax
Definition
partial or total collapse of the lung due to penetration of the chest wall allowing air into the pleural space; caused by an internal source such as a tumor rupturing the outer layer of the lung allowing air from the resp tract to escape into the pleural space, symptoms include chest pain and dyspnea (dec resp rate)
