Term
Internal Respiration
Definition
The exchange in gases between the blood in the systemic capillaries and the tissue fluid. Net result: O2 leaves RBC's and HCO3 enters serum.
Inspiration is also controlled by the intercostal muscles and the diaphragm.
Term
External Respiration
Definition
The exchange in gases between the alveoli and the blood in the pulmonary capillaries. Net result: HCO3 diffuses from serum to enter alveolus where it is converted to water and CO2
Net result: O2 leaves alveolis to enter RBCS and HCO3 enters alveoli and is exhaled as CO2
Term
What Happens to the air as it enters our airway?
Definition
It is: 1) Cleansed though hairs in our nose, mucus in the respiratory tract, and cilia, 2)Moistened through the wet surfaces in our airways, 3) Warmed through our blood vessels lining the airways.
Term
Inspiration
Definition
Air goes in, rub cage moves up and out, diaphragm contracts and moves down, when lung volume in creases pressure decreases and air comes rushing in.
Term
Expiration
Definition
Air goes out, ribcage moves down and in, when lung volume decreases pressure increases and air is pushed out.
Term
What is the average breathing rate of an adult?
Definition
12-20 ventilations per minute.
Term
The respiratory tract is directly sensitive to..
Definition
the levels of CO2 and the Hydrogen Ion (H+) in the blood.
When level of C02 and H+ rises the respiratory center increases depth and rate of breathing.
Term
Pulmonary Arterioles
Definition
(Blue) Carries oxygen poor blood to the lungs.
Term
Pulmonary Veinules
Definition
(Red) Carries oxygen rich blood to the heart.
