Term
respiration
Definition
The process in which oxygen and glucose undergo a complex series of chemical reactions inside the cell
Term
cilia
Definition
The cells that line the nasal cavities have cilia which are tiny hairlike extentions that can move together in a sweeping motion.
Term
pharynx
Definition
The throat... it is the only part of the respiratory that is shared with another system, the digestive system.
Term
trachea

From the pharynx, the air moves into the trachea, or windpipe. The epiglottis folds over the trachea to seal it off when you swallow food.
Term
bronchi
Definition
Air moves from the trachea to the bronchi, which are the passages that take air to the lungs.
Term
lungs
Definition
The lungs are the main organ of the respiratory system. Inside the lungs the bronchi divides into smaller and smaller tubes that look like the branches of a tree.
Term
alveoli
Definition
At the end of each bronchi there are tiny sacs that look like a bunch of grapes. These are called alveoli, and they are special lung tissue that allows the movement of gases between air and blood.
Term
diaphragm
Definition
A large dome-shaped muscle that is attached to the base of the lungs. It contracts and expands to cause air to flow in and out of the lungs.
Term
larynx
