Term
Analysis of Covariance
Definition

A method of statistical analysis broadly applicable to a number of research designs, used to determine differences among the means of two or more groups on a variable. Same method as ANOVA, but analyzes differences between dependent variables.

Term
ANOVA
Definition
Analysis of variance.  A method of statistical analysis broadly applicable to a number of research designs, used to determine differences among the means of two or more groups on a variable. The independent variables are usually nominal, and the dependent variable is usual an interval.
Term
Analytic Induction
Definition
Analytic induction refers to a systematic examination of similarities between various social phenomena in order to develop concepts or ideas. Social scientists doing social research use analytic induction to search for those similarities in broad categories and then develop subcategories.
Term
Anecdotal Evidence
Definition
Evidence, which may itself be true and verifiable, used to deduce a conclusion which does not follow from it, usually by generalizing from an insufficient amount of evidence. For example "my grandfather smoked like a chimney and died healthy in a car crash at the age of 99" does not disprove the proposition that "smoking markedly increases the probability of cancer and heart disease at a relatively early age".
Term
Attrition/Mortality
Definition

The loss of participants during an experiment.
