Term
Uterus
Definition

Site of embryo and fetal development during pregnancy. Contains 3 layers:

Endometrium

Myometrium

Perimetrium

Term
Myometrium
Definition

a thick, muscular layer that is responsible for uterine contractions associated with intercourse (to help move sperm through the uterus), at menstruation (to help pushmenstrualfluid out of the uterus), and at childbirth for delivery of the baby (muchmore powerful contractions).

Term
Perimetrium
Definition

thin, connective tissue layer that attaches to ligaments that connect uterus to abdominal wall.

Term
Endometrium
Definition
lining of uterus that develops each menstrual cycle to support a fertilized egg.  If a fertilized egg is not present, then the endometrium degenerates and is shed as menstrual flow.
Term
Cervix
Definition
the gate keeper for the uterus.  A thick connective tissue band about 2 inches in length that separates the uterus and vagina.  Under the influcence of estradiol, the cervix is “open” and allows passage of materials into and out of the uterus.  Under the influence of progesterone, the cervix is “closed” and prevents entry or exit of materials from the uterus.  “Open” and “closed” depend on the type of mucus being secreted by the cervix.  The “open” cervix secretes a thin mucus (due to the influence of estradiol), much like saliva that allows passage of materials, particularly sperm.  The “closed” cervix a thick, pasty mucus (due to the influence of progesterone) that prevents passage of other materials.
Term
Isthmus
Definition

thick-walled portion of oviduct where muscle contracts to push egg into the uterus.

Term
Ampulla
Definition
thin-walled portion of oviduct where fertilization occurs; lined with cilia that beat toward the uterus to carry the egg by fluid current.
Term
Fimbria
Definition
thin-walled portion of oviduct where fertilization occurs; lined with cilia that beat toward the uterus to carry the egg by fluid current.
Term
Fallopian Tube (oviduct)
Definition

captures egg at ovulation, carries egg to uterus, site of fertilization of egg. There are cilia in the fallopian tube that help carry the egg to the uterus

Term
Menstrual Fluid
Definition
If the egg has not been fertilized, the corpus luteum dies and hormones (primarily progesterone) that supports the endometrium disappears, and endometrium dies.  It degenerating endometrium is shed as:
